I don't know this guy but he's a friend of a friend who really needs help - please spread awareness.

(Don't quote me on this... memory is very hazy!). Lots of people have come forward which is great... like Caro said I hope it goes some way to helping the locals, who sadly would probably never get this kind of publicity or at least in raising awareness of just how lucky we are in Britain to have our blood bank and how important donating blood is.

The general update is that Phil is improving... he has a chest infection which is a bit of a setback but otherwise he is recovering well so far.

Thanks for all your responses, it's really great that more people are giving blood/considering giving blood! Well done :) I would love to be a blood donor, unfortunately I don't meet the requirements (don't weigh enough- you have to be 50kg... I'm only 4'11 so weigh a mere 46-47kg. I often wonder why smaller people can't give blood... could they not just take less of it?! Surely some blood from a willing donor is better than none at all???)

Anyway, as far as updates are going, this was posted on the facebook site this morning:

From Neil Pain.

The concern at the moment is that his blood is of such poor quality that it is not helping his body to get the essential things it needs. He has had full dialysis in the last few hours which should help him continue to improve. Yesterday he was not well enough for this so this is a good sign.We are told that the dialysis well help his kidneys to start working again. The hospital is receiving many calls from donors but unfortunately many here are American and Canadian ex pats and either elderly or on medication. However today we have had more than enough donors of a good age give blood and 12 pints have arrived in from Florida.Philip was in surgery yesterday in an attempt to facilitate a better blood supply to his leg.

If they were thought that they were unable to correct this situation they asked and were given permission to remove the leg. In exchange for life we felt it was a good option. Today we have heard that the operation may have been a success but we will not know for sure for another 24 hours or more. They have felt a pulse in his upper leg but although the colour of his foot has improved no pulse has yet been found below his knee. The team here today have given us more hope but he's condition is stabilizing but he still has a small chance of recovery.

So things are looking positive, it looks like they have enough blood for the moment but are still asking for people in Mexico to come forward as he has more ops to go through over the next week.

Thanks again everyone
