some of you might remember that we have done some stories in the VN Times and Vet Times about the controversy about inbreeding in dogs and some people from here kindly contributed quotes.

AS AN OWNER OF THE SHAR PEI I AGREE FULL WELL THAT THERE IS A NEED FOR CHANGE (MY DOG HAS MINIMAL EXCESS SKIN)

PLUS THERE ARE TOO MANY UNWANTED DOGS AT THE MOMENT DUE TO THE CREDIT CRUNCH SO MAYBE IT WONT BE A BAD THING PLUS NEW OWNERS NEED TO DO THEIR RESEARCH REF MEDICAL PROBLEMS BEFORE BUYING A BREED

Re: Kennel Club's new breed standards

Interesting replies, thank you.

Most judges at these shows are breeders or have been breeders themselves so i wonder how 'quickly' they will accept these new standards??

It was on the new last night about the bulldog and how breeders are rallying to save this 'traditional' breed- but what made me laugh was how traditional is the breed we see now a days?? it seems to me that these so called 'breeders' and 'lovers' of the breed have done all the changing and all the kennel club are doind are reverting it back to how it was originally!

It does worry me about the puppy / young dogs that dont comply with the new standards- surely all these changes are going to take lots of generations and lots of line changes to actually produce dogs upto standard and show worthy? So surely we are going to see a lot more breeders wanting to offload pups or are they just going to sell them?

I also saw on the kennel club web site that breeding within the same family lines ie dad to daughter will not be able to registered as pedigree to prevent in breeding, which i think is another brilliant idea to try to stop some of these horrendous hereditary diseases.

And also that owners and puppies being registered with the KC will now have to permanentely identified either with tattoo or microchip- again brilliant!

Lets just hope that they stick to their guns and dont give in to the aqful breeders wanting to continue such awful traits in these poor dogs!

Re: Kennel Club's new breed standards

Surely these aren't "new" breed standards - it's how the dogs should be anyway without human intervention!

I'm pleased that the Kennel Club has done this but would it have been done without the public outcry from the TV programme?? I don't think so! Just wait for the public backlash (ie breeders) - there has already been one "quality" paper with the heading "The End of the British Bulldog" ---- surely if there hadn't been any change the breed standards would have brought about the end of the bulldog.
