I also make them know I am willing to take on any new responsibilites they feel I can manage.
I think with the economy as it is, it may be difficult for your boss to agree to a wage rise. My last review went well so I asked for a pay rise, boss said no money so I asked for it to be reviewed again in 6 months. He agreed and after 6 months I could prove I was still working hard and I got my rise.

We have had nurses almost demanding wage rises as they feel they are worth more and almost holding the boss to ransom ie. well if you dont pay me more I wont do this that or the other, or I'll just do bare minimum! Bosses reaction is immediately defensive and almost more determined not to give the rise.

Think I would be scared of being out of a job if I said give me more or Im walking!!

Re: pay rise

i like it, thats a good idea, i get on great with head nurse and small animal partner/surgeon so that could work. i just wnt to earn enough to save for my own place that shouldnt be that much to ask for. another nurse even took her salary and said to the boss you work out if you could afford to live on this wage. again boss said go then. grrrrrr

Re: pay rise

You could try looking for jobs first and hit them with an offer of employment somewhere else if they don't offer you the pay rise. at least then you'll have a job to move to!!

Re: pay rise

thanks, yes weve had a whole new laboratory installed, and i run it. quite a big job we do alot in house now. and no one else will learn how to use it. so you can imagine when im away, everything gets sent off

Re: pay rise

Have you done any extra CPD or taken on new roles since you qualified? I would put that down in writing alongside any future plans you have for your career and how it will benefit your practice and see if you get any luck then. It's no guarantee it would work but if you emphasise how you want to develop the practice it may put you in a better position than going in saying that other nurses get more money. You can but try!

i got one upon qualifying. but im sure every vn knows the wages are rubbish. im trying to put a package together like you say to get around the rise that way. many nurses before me have taken vn polls to the boss and said this is the average wage were 5 grand below it and they still say fine then leave. so thought i would go with the softly softly approach. i still cant afford to move out of my parents im 26

thanks

Re: pay rise

Did you get a payrise upon qualifying? I'd be cautious of saying that to the manager in case the answer is 'go then'-have seen this done to a nurse before! If you did not get a payrise on qualifying, make a list of new roles/responsibilities you have taken on since becoming a VN and how this benefits the practice. Emphasise that you want to remain at the practice (if you do) and develop as a qualified nurse and any new roles should be recognised with a change of salary.

Rather than demanding that you should get more money, from a business perspective your employers need to see how paying you more will benefit the practice. Some places will try and fob you off with not increasing your pay on qualification which is unfair as you will be expected most likely to take on new responsibilities.

Was anything in your contract about salary increases?
