Yep sagatal no longer available, but you can still get phenobarb injectable

I know i was quite lucky with my current job as i got offered it from a lot of volunteering work and aprt-time work whcih i did there however, i also nuderstand what you lot mean about the "aiming at younger students" for the new course. I have just started at college and the oldest person is about 25 and the youngest it 19! Now i understand what you mean about younger people. From what others, outside of college, seem to think as well, ti would be easier for people to go to college without needing the job and then do the work experience than it is now and therefore they are more likely to get more interest in the course.

Can't you hold onto this job you have for now and only leave once you get another animal based job? I know it's probably not what you want but at least you'll still be in the animal field. Just job search and apply really hard. Continuously. Even volunteer if you have the spare time to do so just to give you even more of an edge when applying for new animal jobs or training positions. I think I am a little impatient waiting for more crystal clear information. I'm leaving my current job in the new year, and I really would prefer not to have to take another dead end non animal based job that i will regret!!!

It's not hard to get cynical about all of this. I agree with you.

I don't think many people know exactly what they want to do until later in life - that's certainly the case for me!! I think shutting mature students out will eventually lower the standard and experience of vet nursing care potentially! Mature students aren't always new to the sector - they've been working in practice for years and have loads of experience and wisdom and eventually get the opportunity or availability to train. We'll lose a lot of this experience and wisdom if all the students are new and young. I don't want to damn younger students as I'm not that old myself - but i appreciate the help and experience of the older colleagues - and the patience!!! xxx

dont suppose the emphasis on younger students has anything to do with the fact that it is also ok to pay them less - sorry getting very cynical about the whole nurse training shambles

I know it can be argued that the younger students have a slightly better ability to retain information but it can also be argued that mature students are more likely to stay the course

I agree!! I think the new education system for becoming a VN is grossly under-analysed and i think it's going to really affect just how many VN's end up coming to qualification. They say they're changing the structure so that there can be more VN's as there's such a shortage at the moment - but i think for those mature students, especially the ones who have changed careers and have already received funding for university, it will be especially difficult for them to get a position and the funding to enrol on the courses. It sucks! I'm VERY lucky that i was offered a training position in September and was taken on the last place of my course. Otherwise I don't think i'd have ever got a training position and god knows i couldn't afford it!! I just hope this new restructuring crap doesn't affect my course now!! Also, my 2 bosses are selling the practice so i also hope that the new bosses whenever they come, will keep me in training.

Sometimes nursing assistant positions are advertised as veterinary assistants. Depending upon the practice there is likely to be some differentiation between VNs/Nursing assts, however you will probably find that the practice(s) cannot answer questions about future training simply because there is no set plan about what is definitely happening.

they might have not worded it correctly.You could always give them a ring and ask what the job entails and what the pre-requisites for the job are.
This is an awkward time for those of us looking for trainee places - I've spent 3 1/2 years of my life looking and held a trainee place for three months before the recession caused reduction in manpower.
I've now switched across to human hospital work, because of the crap way the RCVS deals with the way training works.

Veterinary Assistant usually means a vet who is an assistant to the main practice owner.

Veterinary Nursing Assistant is usually a term for an unqualified vet nurse and is only likely to obtain in-house training enough to do the job and not to gain any formal training towards becoming a QVN

look up the practice in the list of TP's to see if it can currently provide official training - several practices in the last year advertise assistants or trainees but could not provide the training necessary under the current rules.

When the rules change next September the main questions to ask when securing a place are:

will you let me go to college 1 or 2 days a week
if you can't provide enough training in-house, are you prepared to let me disappear for 20 weeks in the first year to get the necessary training?
who will pay for the 20 weeks?
will the practice pay for the two year new VN college course?
