I'm thinking of adopting a cat friendly (or so they say) ex racing greyhound and i was wondering if anyone has any personal experience of this, and what was the outcome i.e. cat left home, dog tried to eat cat on intro, a happy ending etc.

I think it took quite alot of patience, the cats were already dog friendly so they werent really bothered by her she wanted to chase them at every opportunity so she muzzled her and never left them alone together and whenever she went to chase them she had one of those air blaster things that you use to make a noise to distract she used that and it stopped her then she treated her after about 2 months, I think, they were all living happily together, she still left it about a yr before she trusted them to be left together alone though

Re: does anyone have a greyhound (ex-racer) that lives happily with their cat?!

I had an ex-racer with three cats. She wasnt too interested in them and my big black and white tom taught her to stay away when feeding. She wasnt really interested in rabbits either. Probably why she was an ex-racer. Squirrels she would kill to get at though. Only she hadnt realised they went up not along. she had to be house trained at 5 and trained how to use stairs but she made an amazing pet if a little thick.. I had to have her put to sleep 4 days before her 15th birthday due to a massive stroke. Retired greyhounds make wonderful sweet pets and it would be great if more people adopted them

Re: does anyone have a greyhound (ex-racer) that lives happily with their cat?!

Dobbie,

I used to have a cat friendly ex racing greyhound (Sadley had to have her put to sleep 2 years ago). We stipulated this as we had 4 cats at the time. She got on fine with the cats and used to sleep with my persian cat, they curled up together on their duvets either in the kitchen infront of the aga or on the settee.

I have 2 ex-racers - Saskia and Gordon.

Saskia I have had for almost 10 years now. Initially she was very difficult to get used to the cats and did get one of my cats while out one day, she came off worse than the cat though, but luckily we were able to get the cat off her and wasnt a mark on him.

It took a while with dedication, hard work and praise - but it was so worth it in the end. Now Saskia can quite quite happily with my cats and are good friends and will often sleep together. I also have a house rabbit - Tabitha. Saskia doesnt mind her at all. Lots of nights she sleeps in the kitchen - with the door into the hall open as she likes to come down to bed during the night and has never bothered with Tabitha.

Gordon on the other hand is relatively new and he is still in the 'training' process! Definitely invest in a muzzle, but make sure it is a proper greyhound one with the safety strap on the bottom - this makes sure the dog cannot get it off.

Good luck - it will be so worth it in the end. If I can offer you any more advice, give me a shout anytime!

Re: does anyone have a greyhound (ex-racer) that lives happily with their cat?!

We adopted a street cat. The x-racer was fine he took time thought. It was a different cat that trained him. The cat gave a fantastic right hook at the flashing teeth of Milkybar (Pacesetter) and followed it through with a left hook and a set of comments that would put me to shame. Ever afterwards Milky would never ever ever look at another cat. And I mean look he would let his eyes go in any direction but at a cat.

Re: does anyone have a greyhound (ex-racer) that lives happily with their cat?!

We have a client who has an ex racer with 2 cats. In was askin her and she said it was hard initiaaly - had to watch the dog but trained him to leave them alone and no fine. I do personally think it helps if you have a more confident cat that won't run away - my cat stands her ground with my whippet and they are good friends - but if we see a cat out and it runs he will try to chase.
