There are 7 of us on the rota this year so its has worked out quite fairly.
We ask if anyone has preferance for certain days then share the rest out equally.
This year as there is the weekend and bank hol monday to cover it works out that we all do one day each. We will start at 9am and do a full 24 hrs working/ on call.
We've always been quite lucky to get volunteers for the 'big' days but nobody seems keen to do the inbetween bits.

We don't work them as of this year thanks to VetsNow (woohoo thank you guys!). But before we shared it equally. 4 nurses to split the day and night shifts between, so 2 shifts each. Last one in did xmas day, unless someone else particularly wanted it, my first year working there i did xmas day and xmas day night, the next year boxing day, so this year i was due to do new year. It was always worked out between us so that is was fair. Looking forward to working NONE of it this year

we share all ours out...starts off with people volunteering to do what days they want ( we close this year from the 23rd to the 4th) i always volunteer to do new yrs eve and day as i hate that time of year. any people who are late volunteering are given the rest of the days, we have 2 nurses on every day during our closure period including xmas day,

We share ours out between us. Last year I did new years eve and new years day and this year I'm doing xmas eve. We just sort out who wants to do what and never had any problems with covering all the days. Only problem last year was I stayed up really late on new years eve playing guitar hero with the vet and then had to get up at 8am to sort the animals out. I was knackered! lol

I only work weekends so ive got sat/sunday as normal so thats fine by me as my normal weekend, but next year xmas day n boxing also fall on sat /sun but as i have 2 lil ones then hoping to sort summat out.

If i dont work them i will have to make up the hours missed -so this year makes no difference to me as long as im there to see kids open pressies - i dont mind.

Surely that means if you weekend happens to fall on other B/holidays in the year that is a bit unfair! We usually share out all the bank holidays at the beginning of the year inc christmas and new year

We used to put all the days that needed covering over xmas in one pot and the new year days in the other. The people who did new years the year before picked out of the xmas pot and vice versa. That seemed to be the fairest way, so no-one did the same day 2 years running

thanks guys, just that new trainee has got the xmas day boxing day and bank hol mond, as its fallen on her weekend on, only inpatient cover not oncall, but other years we have shared them out, just think it was unfair the h nurse gave her the lot, next year we on call at xmas, so b interesting to see what happens, esp as it would fall on h, nurse weekend!!!!

That is what we do. We also will swap as some of us prefer to do xmas than new year - definately works out fairer

hiya, yes this is what we do at my practice. all duty nurses sit down and we share them out. however there is always one day no one wants to do for example i said i would work xmas day and new years eve as i didnt want to do xmas eve(best night out where i live) so the nurse who did xmas eve only had to do one shift where as the other 4 of us got 2 days each as no one else wanted xmas eve either. dont know if that would work where you are?
