He also appears to be very pro-nurse and values his nurses. His talks at BVNA and CPD that he organises for nurses backs that up. Some of the more extreme stuff he does I dont know how I feel about but if your into orthopaedic referrals it would prob be one of the best places in the country to work. I would be tempted to go there for the day and see how they work.

Re: What's it like to work at Noel Fitzpatrick
It is busy! A lot of ops. You get to see some really interesting cases. The work is primarily anaesthesia - I would have one case assigned to me per shift, or two if we were busy (I would stay with each case from premedication to recovery, typically around 4-5 hours.) The rest of the day would be spent circulating in prep assisting with X-Rays, clipping, scrubbing, or sedating rechecks for radiography and CT.

It's hard work but enjoyable. The late shifts can be hard work (3pm-12am) especially if your case is the last op into theatre or a long op such as an endoprosthesis, because if your surgery runs past the end of your shift you have to stay until it is awake, as the night nurses solely care for the inpatients.

Re: What's it like to work at Noel Fitzpatrick

I've just locummed at Fitzpatrick Referrals for a week as the night nurse.

How come everyone thinks its normal to start routine procedures so late in the day? You don't mean spays/dentals etc do you? Surely this is not normal in general practice? Animals would need to be kept overnight, when surely its best to recover at home? I know our clients would not want to bring the animals in first thing in the morning, then not have them operated on till 4 o'clock or later. Fair enough I guess, if you have staff that come on in the evening to take over from day staff. So, if Noel Fitzpatrick starts an op at 7pm, does this mean he has not been working all day? I doubt it. Surely its best to start ops when everyone is fresh & not tired at the end of a day? (especially difficult, referral cases) We do routine ops in the day, then keep after 4 free for emergencies. I'm sure out boss would have us operate long into the night on routine stuff - but for who's benefit & at what cost?
Sorry think you've misunderstood, I work in solely referral (much like NFP).

When I talk about routine ops I mean routine to us ie cruciate surgery, patella surgery etc... and all our ops stay in over night for post op pain management by on site staff. Some of our routine procedures can last for 1-3hrs dependant on the surgery being undertaken. and not to mention emergencies or the odd 'dump' on a friday afternoon....

Re: What's it like to work at Noel Fitzpatrick

Not sure I agree with starting routine ops so late in the day. Surely its best to get them done early enough for the animal to go home the same day & receive all the TLC it can milk out of it owners!. Emergencies are a different matter of course. So, if Noel Fitzpatrick starts an op at 7pm, does that mean he hasn't worked for the earlier part of the day? Surely, he consults etc too. Can't be a great idea to start major ops at the end of a long day can it? We hear all the time about doctors etc working too long hours & making mistakes due to tiredness. Not for a moment suggesting that NP has made any mistakes - just wondering how it all works there!

Re: What's it like to work at Noel Fitzpatrick

Fridays are usually pretty mad at our place! Normally starts around 3pm (the witching hour as we have now begun to call it) and we we the phone call with the friday 'dump' lol

Anyway, back to the subject in hand we work a variety of shifts between 8am and 9pm. I reckon it would be pretty good place to learn loads of new skills and if your considering further education, prob an ideal place to start

Re: What's it like to work at Noel Fitzpatrick

Same here lol - we had routine op come out of theatre at 7pm on fri!Friday was a bit mad to be honest!Agree with Caro and Nick - it is very highly likely these nurses will be working as part of a shift or on a 'late' shift.

The only way you will find out if this is for you is to ring them up have a chat and spend some time there - no one else can decide for you!Everyones different.
