- you are not alone in your concerns. I also think it is wrong that students over 25 have little chance because of funding and yet it is the older more mature students in my experience that stay the course and qualify whilst the younger students fresh from school are more likely to drop out. ( just an observation and I realise not all younger students drop out and not all older students carry on to qualification)

I have two students who are on the transitional year and we have had similar issues to everyone else. There doesn't seem to be much guidance re the NPL, I was told I had to cross every T and dot every I at the beginning now I am being told to just hurry up and sign things off. We also only had since January to start the NPL after the *** up with the log ins. I think I would have really struggled with the amount of work the students are expected to do - ours have just had a 5000 word assignment to do and are supposed to be preparing for their final RCVS MCQ exams a month away as well as still having exams every week at college! And they work full time. Its really unfair on them.

I'm curious to know which colleges are used.I'm a clinical coach with 2 transitional students and have recieved no help or support from the college or RCVS, essentially from what I can gather they appears to be changing the rules or making them up as they go along which is causes a great deal of stress to all involved espicially as student part way through could have stayed with the nvq system. I have just found out that my students can 'practice' some skills even if the animal is not in for that procedure which to me makes the whole system a bit of a joke if the case doesn't even have to be real.My student were also almost 6 months delayed in starting the NPL but no considerations are made for this in terms of exam deadlines and i'm now informed that because teir college is short staffed they may not have time to cover the whole course meaning they cannot sit their exams despite us working our backsides off which is not my students problem quite frankly.What I find intresting is when you read the 'official feedback' the system has being well recieved however I am yet to meet a real student/coach/vet who agrees.Rant over!!

Im on the transitional course, and through no fault of my own either! I had already started my NVQ L3 and was half way through the course before the Royal College threw me off it Dont get me started with the Royal College lol. Anyhow, I started the 'hybrid' diploma course in Sept and have only had two of my assignments so far. Im worried because no one can really help us with these assignments as no one knows what were supposed to be doing (including the Royal College)! Our current assignments are due in just before our exams, and the last two after our exams. What i want to know is how are we supposed to find time to cram NPL, Blended learning (the practical bit), Assignments, Revision, Seen and Unseen exams in college, Theory exams in the test centres, and a full time job?? To top it off, my clinical coach is leaving on maternity leave in 4 weeks and i HAVE to have my NPL completed by then aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

I have a transitional student who did NVQ 2 last year and the diploma this year.
To say she is struggling is an understanement. Not only does her NPL have to be complete before she can sit her practical exams but her registration was delayed by 5 months so she only started the NPL at the end of Jan!!

She hasn't received at least 2, maybe 3 of the RCVS assignments yet as her tutor is worse than useless and she now as exams to study for.

It's a joke. The RCVS have really messed up this time. None of our students are confident about this. Not even our new starters who are now cramming a 3 year diploma course into 2 years!

Your the same as our students, they did NVQ2 last year and are now doing diploma 3 this year, the workload has increased alot and they are struggling. Plus there are college exams as well as RCVS exams plus the NPL and RCVS assignments and college assignments.

It seems too much to cram in to one year to me, they are only going to college 1 day a week.

i am on the 'transitional' year which means i did the nvq2 last year but am doing the diploma level 3this year which is two years crammed into one as there is no funding for any other option it is completely stupid much of the work is at higher level to make it similar to university courses and because it is all crammed into one yr there is no extra help available for the higher level stuff even though the entry requirements are still gcse level. its driving me mad and very unfair.

No it would be messed up if the training scheme changed from NVQ in 1st year, to the other syllabus in 2nd year-once you start the NVQ you will have until 2011/12 to complete it so the new training shouldn't concern you really. No need to worry

Yep that's right! The award won't suddenly be changed for this years first years, and I doubt very much you would be expected to change over next year because the your training would be completely messed up.

much like green book to NVQ you had two years from introduction of nvq to qualify under greenbook or else transfer to NVQ

I'd have thought that too. Didn't the standards change in 2008 for portfolio and you didn't have to change if yo didn't want to?

I reckon it'll be like when they phased out the old style diploma! We have 5 years from registration to complete it. so I reckon you guys will have a set period of time from enrolment to qualify

I was under the impression that nothing had been finalised yet.

I am in my first year of training and have been told that my 2nd year will not be affected and will continue with the portfolio and current syllabus and ONLY newly enrolled students next year well be going onto the new scheme and current students like me and nurses already enrolled and training will have until 2012/13 to complete their qualification??!!

I don't think it is finalised yet but the prospect annoys me - YES we will be affected - we have to move onto new qualification structure according to my college.

Still to be decided. Libby Earle issued a statement to go through the first consultation of the proposals but nothing definite as yet.

Yes I think the new scheme is only going to start with newly enrolled students once everything is finalised. If you have already started it shouldn't concern you as you will still have til 2012 I think to complete your award.
