For the PCV lab task it says 'you are not expected to balance or start the centrifuge' so does that mean that although I need

Re: PCV practical task

Make sure you also secure the lid, it must be ready to turn on. When you indicate that you have finished the task you are saying you would be happy to turn on the centrifuge as it is.

Re: PCV practical task

Excellent - thats what I thought. Explain that normally I would prepare two tubes in exactly the same way so that the centrifuge is balanced but for the purposes of the task just do one and then continue onto screwing on the safety plate etc etc.

Many thanks guys - good luck to everyone who is taking their exam this weekend!!

Re: PCV practical task

You do not need to do 2 haematicrit tubes. And you do not need to balance it. It does you no harm to say that you would normally balance it, but you do not need to.

You should have the safety plate on and lid fully secured, right time and speed set. Because it must be ready to turn on (but as others have said you don't) at the end of the task, i.e if the examiner were to turn it on when you finished would it be safe? would it work?

Re: PCV practical task

I would still do 2 haematocrit tubes, but you dont need to start the cetrifuge.

Re: PCV practical task

[quote user="StephB"]

That's right! Because the recommended spin time on the centrifuge you'll have for your practicals takes 5minutes, means that if you were to spin the tubes down, by the time this is done your task will be almost complete. You will be asked to prepare one sample tube, and then read the results of a tube that has already been spun.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
