We would probably move on to the East Borders near Coldingham /Eyemouth and some of the 3 bed houses are about 150000 which is cheaper than where we are. Our 3 bed was 170000 when we bought it and it did go up to 210000 two yrs ago but has now dropped to 185000.

I don't know what prices are like where you are but you might get a shock in Scotland. I moved to Edinburgh from Lincoln and the price differential is horrendous. Back in Lincoln I have a 3 bed house which is literally in the city centre (5mins to everything) and it has a big back garden as opposed to a yard and is worth about £95,000. I couldn't even get a 1 bed studio for that in central Ed. A friend has just paid £120,000 for a 2 bed flat 6 miles outside the centre. But I guess Lincoln was always very cheap that was one of the things that attracted me to buying there in the first place - one of the few places a vet nurse could buy their own home circa 2001.

My experience of Scotland is it is very very very expensive much as I love living in Edinburgh. In Lincoln my council tax was £72/year (split three ways), the water (on a meter) was £28/month and my average gas/elec bill combined was £60(ish)/month. When I moved to Scotland I first started off in Ayr (south-west scotland - 40miles from the nearest city and a very average town - apologies to people living in Ayr) and the council tax on a two bed flat with no garden/balcony was circa £150, the water rates (no meter) was circa £42 and my gas/electricity bill was circa £100/month. As I was still paying the bills on the house in Lincoln at the time (when the rooms were let as opposed to the house) these prices were directly comparable.

Re: For Sale

Thanks for that it is always interesting to hear from other people.

OH runs his engineering business from home in the Conservatory so it is all a bit cramped, plus we are expecting baby no 2 in under 2 weeks!!

We were thinking of going through Peter Joy estate agents as they do a whole management service,.... hopefully the boiler will be fine as it was replaced last year!! (part of our dept problem!)

Thay said that anyone with pets would have to have the carpets cleaned at their own cost before they left and any damage would be charged to them as they would lose their deposit.

OH would really love to move to Scotland, near his parents and i would love to too, but i am an only child and my parents are within30 min of me here and they are quite reliant on me. OH's parents are a bit more independant than mine!

Houses in scotland are dirt cheap for a bigger house!

Re: For Sale

Hi Selina,

I would be really careful about letting your property anyway. I currently let my house out and it has massively added to my set problems. Over the previous year it would have been cheaper for me to board the place up and just pay the interest on the mortgage then it has been to let it. Two months after letting the boiler blew up, was too old for parts to be found so had to be replaced at a cost of £2000 (I would have made do until I had the money but, with tenants, that is not an option obviously). I started off letting rooms and various items got damaged - the ceramic hob was cracked from someone dropping something on it (etc) - but, as it occurred in communal areas and no one owned up I couldn't do anything about it. Then, I allowed a tenant with cats. They place smelt clean (loads of cleaning products) when they left so I gave them back their deposit. I then had the carpets industrially cleaned which is when the smell of cat urine became overwhelming and I had to have the place recarpeted for the new tenants. Bad as I feel I now have a strict no cats policy in place (I already ban house rabbits as have seen the effects of them also) and dogs are on a case by case basis. The farce is, due to the accumulated debts from the previous year, I cannot afford to board the place up and just pay the interest so have to rent. Thankfully, I have a friend and her partner renting lonterm (circa 3 years probably) so things should settle down but renting your home out is a worry

Re: For Sale
If anyone has anything exciting to sell, may I open an account? hehehe This whole recession has me hung, drawn and quartered!!!!!
I know what you mean, We were thinking of selling our house and renting for a while, but jsut got the house valued and it has dropped a fair bit, so its not worth selling it as once we have paid estate agent fees we would be very close to what we bought it for.

Then we thought maybe we could LET it and rent something bigger for our selves, just got it valued for rent and the rent wouldnt even cover the mortgage or the TO LET fees!! unless we went back to interest only payments on the mortage which wouldnt really make us any better off, so we are stuck here for a little while by the looks of it.

We were hoping to clear some debts too, i dont work as i am a full time mum so its all a bit scary at the moment even more so expecting another baby and that my hubby runs his own business.

Re: For Sale

most certainly Louise I'm on my way hehe

Re: For Sale

Oops - we need to get back to frugal living tips then.
