Also in response to an earlier post as far as I am concerned scaling and polishing should be a schedule 3 procedure. Remember schedule 3 procedures are the procedures that we can do as VN's RVN's and SVN's. i.e it should not be some thing that unqualified members of staff do.

It should be, but there are lots of other things that should also be Sch3 too such as monitoring anaesthetics but it's unlikely they will be. Rubbish really.

Re: Tooth Extractions-legalities.

[quote user="Rachel Jayne"]

You're not removing the teeth, so get away with it in that respect, but for rasping molars you are technically entering the oral cavitiy I spose.....

It's not really about entering a body cavity, it's weather it is minor or major surgery, it is a common misconception that it is the term oral cavity that prevents us doing dental extractions.

As we have disscussed many times in the past there is no list of things we can and can't do, only the rather ambiguous statement of "minor surgery not entering a body cavity". That clearly rules out many procedures, like bitch spays and fracture fixation. But when it comes to dental extractions this statement on it's own is not particularly useful.

However the RCVS consider dental extraction requiring instruments is an act of major surgery, and therefore should not be done. What this means is that if a complaint is made and you are a registered nurse, it is unlikely to be a positive outcome.

Re: Tooth Extractions-legalities.

Yes.
