We were walking our dogs on Monday evening , about 6.30pm .
As we walked along a path alongside a main road , we could see a GSD in front of us , a couple of hundred yards away , seemed to be by itself.
We stopped in our tracks and looked

Re: RTA - what can you do?

Hitting a dog would be my worst nightmare! Unfortunately we've seen quite a few RTA dogs lately at work and nearly all of them have been DOA. It does make me quite cross though when people try to blame the driver for hitting their dog. As a dog owner, you are responsible for keeping your dog off roads and away from cars. I'm very careful with my dogs as if they ever got run over I would never forgive myself.

Re: RTA - what can you do?

Aww thats awfull :( are you ok now??

I know whats it like 1st hand.. I knocked a dog over 2yrs ago along the 'old A48'.. there are one or two big houses on the side of the road & this dog ran out in front of me from it's garden, and before I knew it, I hit him at 50mph I instantly got out in hysterics, crying, shouting, panicing, shaking - you name it! The owner of the dog came out.. tried to calm me down 1st but I was more worried about the dog.. His responce was "dont worry about him love, it was our fault for not closing the gate".. I was gobsmacked!! I checked the dog and he had died .. the bloke was more concerned about me having to drive home in the state I was in.. took me ages to get over it.. poor doggy..

Re: RTA - what can you do?

That must have been a horrible thing to see Ruby. Like others have said, you couldn't have done any more than you did.

Re: RTA - what can you do?

That is my worse fear! having another dog attack and kill one of my wee Borders, its not the first time that Ive literally hoisted them both up in to my arms when another dog has shown aggression towards them.
I dont think there was anything more you could have done - after all, you did go and look for the dog at the time.

Maybe put a few signs up in local places like shops etc telling people about a GSD in an rta? In case it has an owner looking for him/her

Re: RTA - what can you do?

without having found the dog there was nothing else you could have done, taking time to try and find it was a darn site more than what some members of the public should do.

because of the profession we r in I think we often have that thought of should I have done more but sometimes its just not possible. you did what you could and I can understand your initial apprehension at approaching the dog sooner because of past experiances.
