Somebody has commented saying that after an RTA she couldn't afford to pay for her cats surgery so took him in to be PTS...then had a phone call from the vet saying he had done the op for free because he couldn't bear to euthanase the cat and needed the practice. Hopefully he would inform the client of all options and not just the one he favours and allow them to make the choice? - but reading the various articles I am doubting that.

not only has he harmed the profession as a whole, he has harmed the animals that may not ever get near a surgery now because owners may be afraid to bring them in.

Re: Daily mail article on vets

Mine was posted!! Emma Cooper from Vet Times is looking to do a piece on this, so if anyone has anything interesting and useful to say then you could always email her!

I would never ever have chemo done on any of my pets either, whats the point!! to get 6 more months of worry because thats all it will be.

I think if you can treat a pet and give it a good quality of life through an illness, and as soon as it starts to decline then I agree PTS is the best option.
I'm confused by your comment about chemo...

My cat is on chemo for an mesenteric lymphoma, yes, in another thread I've just reported that she seems to have suddenly gone downhill a little, but 2 months ago prior to her exlap at diagnosis, she was happy & had a good quality of life. There's no way I could've put her to sleep then, nor leave her & see her struggle & not try to help her
Ok, I will explain it better, I have watched 3 of my dogs suffer from ostesarcoma, and consequently watched them daily for any signs of decline, it actually rips my heart out doing the watching thing, and knowing that one day I will have to make the decision to PTS, I actually find it more gut wrenching with the wait for want of a better word, than the actual process of PTs, because at the end of the day and in my own experience sometimes it's a blessed relief when it is all over, and thats hy I would not put any of my pets through something just to give them a few months extra, and me a few months more of worry and stress.

At no point did I mention watching something struggle either, all I said was I would let things take their course naturally and when they did decline I would PTS

I will also add, that one of my dogs, in the pic below, on the left as you look is in chronic renal failure, in the acute phase she was on deaths door twice within 2 weeks, I had her hospitalised and on a drip, she is on meds daily and prescription food also, currently she is doing very well, and her last bloods her urea was 0.1 away from the normal range, her crea was still over 300, but she copes and shows no sign of illness and to look at her, you would think she as a fit and healthy dog. However I have said after her 2nd collapse, that if it happens again I will PTS, I am not doing that to her or to me for a third time. She is 3yrs old, but if she were older when she was initially ill I would have PTS on the first collapse.

Re: Daily mail article on vets

Has this been discussed on VetSurgeon? Owners are advised of the options, regardless of cost and the owner will then make an informed decision.

With regards to the cost of booster vaccinations, I wish we could get vaccines for "pence" however they are not as cheap as this and the fee includes a full clinical examination to check for abnormalities and to discover the 'normal' for certain patients, so that should a problem occur we have records of previous visits.

Veterinary Medication may be available cheaper online, but this is due to bulk stock being purchased, I'm sure your local corner shop is more expensive than Tesco's or Asda?

Sadly, there are bad apples in every profession, but that does not give anyone the right to tar every vet with the same brush.
