I have checked with the course manager; the diploma counts towards 180 credits of the top up degree which is worth a total of 360 credits. So 50%

When you put it like that it does not sound so bad.. I am doing 4 modules per yr(well this yr anyway) and paying just over 1,000 and thats Diploma level. It is quite scary when you see the full whack laid out in front of you though.

Hi STRVN, that is the going rate for a fulltime degree course across most universities. In defence of Harper Adam's I would also say that the £3225 that they charge the students doesn't cover the full cost to the university of running the degree. The government subsidies it. If you paid the full cost it would probably be more around the £30,000 mark (total for the four years - maybe more).

I cannot find the info Beth posted me either but I think it is unlikely that the top-up degree is 4 years full time - I am assuming that it is 1 - 2 years part-time dependent on prior accrediting learning (what you've studied before signing up) so the cost would be less.

I have to say that I would expect to pay this. I paid for my undergraduate degree at Lincoln (£1000/year for three years - having got in just before the government decided to make undergrads contribute more) and my 1yr MSc course was almost £5000 (I studied it part time though to make it more affordable). My tuition fees for my PhD are in the region of £4000/year over 3 - 4 yrs (thankfully I am now funded so don't have to find that money). I did go for a teaching job on a degree course that was undercutting the other similar institutes across the whole of the region (by about £1000 - £1500) but the facilities were poor in comparison.

I take on board though that VNs but, as a VN who has done it as a mature student, I would say that it can be do-able. I went to uni fulltime so that I could access the student loans system (realistically I won't ever have to pay most of it back as my wage is so low so, in effect, it was almost a grant to me) and the locummed fulltime in the holidays and at weekends for Vets Now.

Hi Lou, I get what you are saying, but nearly 4 grand!!!!!!! my eyes are on stalks at that I am afraid, and thankfully my course is affordable as I am paying it myself, so dont have the luxury of a boss paying it. if it was the above cost there is no way I could afford it, It seems a shame at the cost as so many might well not be able to afford that if they are self funding. Modules are the core modules for the Dip AVN as defined by the RCVS and:

SA medical nursing

SA surgical nursing

Diagnostic imaging

Anaesthetic nursing

Infection control

Supporting health care of companion animals (also subject to validation by AMTRA)

I will check re: exam fees. I cannot see any mention of additional fees in the course spec but I will check with course manager. This will have to be this evening.

Thats fair enough,but you have to admit, it is very expensive, and unless bosses are willing to pay, then I cant see a lot of interest, plus bosses being what they are will shop around for a less expensive option.

By the way you never did say how much the diploma was costing from yourselves.

Thats a pity as I am sure there will be plenty wanting the whole of the ins and outs of the course, and being that VN's are the poorest of the poor I think finance will be top of their agenda.
