The boy that was killed was attacked by an american bull terrier. The police had received a report that this breed was being bred at the address but did nothing.
Whats the point of having acts like that in place if they are not enforced?!

I do believe in bringing in dog licences but they will only work if they are policed vigorously.

Re: responsible dog ownership
I vote they bring back dog licenses....will compulsary vaccinating, microchipping & neutering.

Think it will solve a lot of the UK's problems in that regard.

TOTALLY agree

Re: responsible dog ownership

I think that as a profession the most we can do is educate those that come through our door.

Sadly, dogs being used as weapons or status 'objects' is becoming all too common.

I think gang culture has a lot to say for such dogs, and I don't think any shock tactics or training can help? I could be wrong?

I live up in the North East so I don't see a lot of the Inner City culture so not 100% on it but ?

Re: responsible dog ownership
But, perhaps owners who think its acceptable to have badly behaved dogs due to their own ignorance could be shown photos of dog attacks.....shock tactics.
The guy whose 2 SBTs attacked my dog knows theyre not great with other dogs as ive seen him around before and his told me...he was covered in my dogs blood as he pulled his dog off...is that what it takes?

Or do we think the guide dog attack being in the news may drive it home to some owners of badly behaved dogs?

I definitely agree training is the key - but we've obviously not doing enough as a veterinary profession if there are all these irresponsible owners/dangerous dogs (maybe i see it more being in north london than other areas of the country)...we can up the ante with client education, puppy parties, youth clubs etc, but how do we get the message out there to those who aren't going to vets, like the guy on that programme about the woman who bred a litter of SBTs and the guy couldnt afford to get it vaccinated - wheres his education coming from?

I have 2 westies and got a rep as "westie nurse" at previous practices. So ended up chatting to westie owners and I lost track of the amount of people who said things such as "oh he loves his food so much he growls when we take it away" or things to such effect.

It is not cute, but it will be even less cute when he has his adult teeth and weight behind him!
