So many people bring their cats in on their shoulder and i can see that one day a cat is gonna escape or get attacked.
we don't have a sign, but if I am on reception, and someone comes in with an unsecured animal, I just tend to get a practice lead or carrier for them to use while they are waiting. I mentioned it to our PM and she said that it could be a sticky point with the practice insurance if anything were to happen to an unrestrained animal in the waiting room. most clients are more than happy to use the practices leads/carriers, and then just return them to us after putting their pet in the car.

we also loan cat carriers out FOC but for a £5 deposit

I think it is more important for us, as we just have one waiting area.
we tend to ask people if they want a lead/carrier. a lady yesterday said her can wont go in a basket and its soft so would just sit on her knee. we have a tiny waiting room and there were a couple of dogs in at the time.

we also lend carriers to people if they leave a refundable deposit.

Liking that Lovecat. Can I ask, does anyone do a disclaimer in the waiting room?(ie- The practice does not take responsibility for any pet injured while not restrained within the waiting area) just a thought that a lot may actually pay a bit more attention to........ and something I might suggest to bosses.

i have thought about this before. wouldnt suprise me if people tried to blame us if their dog/cat was attacked. are we liable if we dont have such a sign?

i think a cat on a harness is classed as restraint. aslong as the person the end of the harness is in control (i can imagine some of our clients letting their cat wander over to see the dogs in the room!)

our surgery is quite close to a busy high street so you would think our clients would be a tad more worried about their animals escaping when the door is opened. i returned from lunch one day and as i opened the door a dog tried to shoot out of it, luckily i blocked its path. that could of been a bit nasty

Re: cats in carriers/dogs on leads

We have a notice in the waiting room requesting that all cats are kept in secure baskets and dogs on leads, we do have a seperate cat waiting area so that reduces the stress for the cats seeing other dogs. I have seen a couple of people just carry their cats in but once someone explained that it was practice policy to keep them in baskets they were absolutely fine with putting their cats in a basket

Re: cats in carriers/dogs on leads
We have a sign that says 'All cats must be in a basket and all dogs must be on a lead' with a cartoon of a dog leaping at a cat thats all fluffed out with back arched - to demonstrate the worst that could happen!
