I've never been skiing before and haven't got a bloody clue what to wear, buy etc...
I've invested in a few books (coming shortly) but if anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated I'm going to book a few starter lessons

Re: Slippery Slopes!

aaaw thanks guys your the best

Re: Slippery Slopes!

very jealous i spent 2 winters working in the french alps before moving back here and starting nursing.

key items - invest in good quality gear - essentials are:

gloves - proper ski gloves as they are waterproof and help remove sweat but keep ur hands warm

hat - make sure its a nice warm sensible one - dont go like the parisians and wear massive furry things!

Good pair of goggles (i would be wary of just wearing sunnies as they are more likley to smash if you fall on ur face - tallking from experience that is),

ski/board pants (trousers) and a good jacket - again i would recommend proper gear as they are designed to keep warmth in and moisture out and also to slide along snow/ice when u stack it! also if ur going to a high altitude resort invest in some thermal under tops and gloves - the coldest it got in val d'isere one winter was minus 14c!

warm socks as well - also make sure u take some boots that are suitable for walking around on icy pavements - trust me u can get a nasty injury walking to the pub!!

Its amazing fun and i miss it everytime it snows up here in yorkshire - my ski's are looking quite sad in the attic nowadays and its true that the snow domes are nothing like the real thing but they do give you a bit of an idea what to expect.

Re: Slippery Slopes!

Oooh! How exciting! I went for the 1st time last year and LOVED it. I went snow boarding, but think the personal gear is mainly the same. Being a new-comer to it a bit later than some, this is what I would recommend:

1. Very padded, very insulated underpants! I couldn't sit down comfortably for a week and had to give up boarding on the last day as the idea of landing on my *** again was too much by that point!

2. Good ski gloves

3.Good ski/board sunglasses or goggles, but I tried the goggles and they steamed up.too much.

4. Ski trousers- I just wore these with thin leggings underneath, as they were so cosy warm.

5. Socks. People turned their noses up at my cheap, but thick, fluffy socks, so I went and spent 10Euros on a proper pair and my feet were bloody freezing! So I recommend the cheap fluffy ones!

Most people told me to buy a proper ski/board jacket, but I just wore a good, thick waterproof and I was fine. Also, I didn't buy a helmet, as they are expensive, but I was strongly recommended one.

I would agree with the private lessons thing. There were 2 of us newcomers and we had lessons together, but another girl in our chalet had private lessons and progressed much better.

I'm so jealous now, I want to go again!!

Re: Slippery Slopes!

i love skiing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been several times but haven't been in a few years
I had one lesson in an indoor place and the first and second time I was out on the real slopes I had group lessons which I thought was great! (you get to meet lots of peeps)
Especially cause they know the route and what you can deal with, but i can imagine that 1:1 lessons can be better.

I so wanna go again! I rather go 1 week skiing then 3 weeks sunhols!!!

Re: Slippery Slopes!

I went skiing two years ago with my boyfriend and his family, them being very good and me never skiing before.

I took a few lessons at the snowdome in Birmingham but nothing will prepare you for going out there. While there I had private 2hr lesson every mornin then went out with my boyfriend and his family, they were impressed in how quickly I picked it up.

Note that I tried a group lesson and hated it, they all spoke french where as I can talk th basics. One on One lessons were more money worth every penny

Re: Slippery Slopes!

I was supposed to be going snowboarding early next year but it's not happened.
