Me and hubby both have regatta walking coats.

We have lightweight waterproof jackets that fold up into one of the pockets.They are pretty good and fairly windproof.

We have just bought our winter walking coats from a regatta outlet shop.

I am sooooooooooo in love with mine.

It has a really heay duty waterproof outer with an inner fleece , really deep inside pockets and zip up outer pockets.It also has a really stiff collar which ,when turned up keeps my ears lovely and toasty.

The only draw back is that is weighs a ton! but due to the fleece underjacket i dont need extra layers - i really feel the cold but am as snug as a bug in my coat.

Best buy of the year so far.

I have a north face one which has a fluffy fleece which you can zip inside it. It is lovely and toasty warm when its very cold and still warm if you wear it without the fleece.
It was quite pricy though, should have been £280 but was £150 in the sale and I got it as a crimbo present last year so even better

Have a friend that supplies the specail jackets that are breathable and go down to some stupid chill factor. They are used in the big freezers by various companies. If you want l can get the prices from him l think they are around £40 but l can not swear to it. If you are interested give me a shout.

My boyfriend recently brought me a Joules one, which has a body warmer which comes out and the hood does come off too, without the body warmers its soo lightweight and easily put in my backpack. It was brought in the sale but usually would be £80 and more that you could get a good Northface one.

Have a look in your local outdoorsy shop that's where I got mine from. It's very very dry in there, and comes with a zip in/out fleece so can be converted from a mega snug winter coat to an extra waterproof layer.

The other thing I find very useful for the really wet days is a pair of waterproof trousers, as my trousers between the top of my wellies and the bottom of my coat would get soaked! You can pick up a pair for about £15, and I think you can order them through NVS

If you're layering and don't need a 'warm' jacket but a breathable one, look for something in eVent fabric - I splashed out (pardon the pun) on an eVent cycle jacket and haven't regretted it at all. Montane make some good ones - mine is BRIGHT YELLOW but they do do normal ones as well! Worth keeping an eye on EBay for them!

It is waterproof, but not 'showerproof', its really toasty warm and its nice and soft so its easy to move around comfortably when outdoors... It is expensive but it's worth it. It is quite fitted but has little pop buttons on the sides to make it a little more loose if you wanted to wear extra padding underneath.

My husband has just bought a Northface Hyvent 3 in 1 jacket. It was on offer on the Blacks website/

He is a dog walker and it has kept him dry so far!

I would go for Goretex if you can afford it, but if not I recommend the Hyvent ones!

Berghaus jackets are waterproof, and you get ones where you can add a fleece in colder weather or remove it when its not so cold. They are expensive but worth it.

Do you have a Cotswolds shop near you? We have one near us and they have a really good selection...am going there to get a waterproof waterproof rather than water resistant waterproof...will look more closely at the label next time! The trouble with the shop is they have a lot of nice clothes, so always end up leaving with more than i went in for!!!
