I also remember many years ago my mum had a car accident. It wasnt too bad and she wasnt injured but it was dark and raining and on a quiet road. A man did stop to help her but he had originally driven past, thought better of it and gone back to her. He was worried about stopping as she was a woman on her own and he was a strange man. He was worried in case he was accused of something.

Re: just being neighbourly
I was just commenting on your story, and the levels that some people would go to in order to commit a crime! I had said that I wouldnt really know what I would do in the event of coming across a road traffic accident as that was how my brother died, however, I feel that in the event of such an event happening before me, I would very likely stop and offer assistance, though I may be quite traumatised for a long time afterwards as it would bring back terrible memories for me.

I think its great that still hear stories about good samaritians, makes you realise that the world isnt full of nasty people after all!

Re: just being neighbourly

It was good that someone did that but having been at the hospital many times over th past 2 years with my dad there.
As someone said on a previous post about not getting out of the car, I worked with a locum nurse years ago who was from down south and she had heard of a horrific story... one which has stuck in my mind ever since and made me not want to get out of the car.

A young lady had finished work and was driving home down a country lane, she emergency stopped to find a 'baby' wrapped up in a blanket in the road, on closer inspection she found it was only a doll (she thought it had maybe been thrown out of the car window by a child).

So she got back in her car and drove off, a few seconds later a car sped up to her from behind, flashing its lights and beeping the horn frantically. She increased her speed to get away thinking it was some nutter trying to run her off the road. To cut a long story short she made it back home with the other car still in tow.

She legged in into the house and alerted her boyfriend/ husband, he came out of the house to find a man getting out of his car screaming 'there is some one in your car!!'

Basically what had happened was as she got out of her car to inspect the 'baby' in the road a man had got in on the back seat and hidden. The approaching car from behind had seen it all and he was trying to alert her to the danger. As they turned to look at her car the back door was open and the intruder had fled.

As you say, difficult to know unless you were presented with such an event. I do think I would stop and help (at least thats what my conscience tells me I should do) but I dont really know. However, another way to look at it is, if that were you or I or a member of your family, wouldnt you like a passer by to stop and help? Yes, I would! So maybe, for that reason, I would try and put my personal issues aside, and stop and help - if that makes sense!!!

Re: just being neighbourly

I think until you are presented with that situation, you will never know....

Typing my thoughts out loud as they happen btw......

I would like to think I would stop and offer help... I know I would stop and call 999, but whether I could actually help.... overcome my hangups about human blood, and not think about my family in that position (which I do every time I pass an accident already under control by police etc)

To be first on the scene.....I think I would do what I could - I have seen human emergencys before, and have stemmed bleeding, and reassured the patient. Got covered in blood too, which I would never normally do - usually feel sick at the sight of human blood....

I guess when the situation arrives - you do what you have to! I felt sick as a dog afterwards due to someone elses blood... but at the time that wasn't important..

Saskia - it would have been foolish to stop if you were giving birth - best thing to do -999! I know you know that, but just wanted to second you :)

I'm so sorry about your brother xxx

On the other hand, I would find it very difficult to actually stop and help at the scene of an accident as thats how my only brother died, and its something I would never want to see again, however, on saying that, I do not know how I would react should I ever come across such a thing. I really do thing I would like to stop and offer help, who knows?

Re: just being neighbourly

uggs that is a really ***ty corner in fact forget bend it is L shaped only the other way to what it shows here (corner at the top..
