I would agree with claire - I had similar problem, flippin cat kept doing it in the bedroom or on the landing.... not very nice to step in in the dark!

Now have feliway diffuser on the landing near the litter tray & don't have anymore problems

Are you cleaning the litter tray out regularly? How many litter trays do you have?

You could perhaps move the litter tray to the location where he is urinating/defecating? Maybe he doesn't like the area his litter tray is or something has happened to make him dislike the location?

Have you changed cat litter at all?

What did you use to clean the soiled area? We recommend biological washing powder and surgical spirit.

Have you tried using Feliway diffusers? Try spraying Feliway on areas that he is urinating also incase it's territorial behaviour.
