have evidence that dog attacks on Guides Dogs are an average of 6-8 per month. So 1 a week. Some not as devastating as this one.

However all dogs attacked go through a re=assessment and re-training to help them cope, effectively reducing their ability to do their usual duties. As a charity they are fighting this on various fronts. However they again do not advocate it is a breed issue.

Thought this might show some facts on dog attacks - its restricteto results from fatal dog attacks, but has resonance across all dog attacks.

This is an offence im sure now and the owner of the dog should be prosecuted, sadly the dog would probs be typed as section one and be PTS but the dog may be better off with an owner whom can watch another dog suffer and walk away. Jesus we need a breeding ban and neutering policy so bad! Just FYI The Mayhew Animal home neuters all Bullbreed types free of charge, no questions aksed, please spread the word!!!! No excuses!!
I also live in south London (Peckham) and apart from my next door neighbour, it's a rare day that I see any dog other than the bull types.

The recurring theme, both in what Emma said and in what I see on the streets here every day, is not only the bull type dogs but the 'young lads' bit, and to me, therin lies the problem.

They want image dogs, pure and simple, and if the dog is unruly or have a rep for aggression, the 'cooler' these idiots feel.

That, to me, is the crux of the issue and why I would also 100% support licences for dog owners (or even just licences to own certain breeds) above the dangerous dogs act, which to me is not working because people like these boys under 25 will simply take whatever animal they have and call it a staffy or American and no one seems to argue.

My Mother mentioned to me that in her area (South Wales) they have a kind of 'dog patrol' now and then, where an experienced dog handler goes around with the police looking out for dogs that look like a possible banned breed to investigate, I'm sure they don't have anything like that here as there are just so many of them on the streets every day.

Re: pitbull type dog attacks Guide dog!

3 months! suspended for 2 years! not good enough in my eyes..

Re: pitbull type dog attacks Guide dog!

ok just thought u would like to know that the owner of the dog has been found, charged and sentanced.

I'm not advocating the attacks on people or animals alike but i just want some people to realise the difference between DEED & BREED.

I do not belive that any dog is genetically or inherently bad or viscious. I know it's the owners and the upbringing, whether trained to attack or not trained at all to the point where an owner has no control over the dog.

I just want to make more people aware of this. It's not the breed types fault that they're the breed of choice for thugs and societal drop-outs. If it was any other breed they would be just as viscious and able to KILL. Please everybody bear this in mind before damning the breed.

Re: pitbull type dog attacks Guide dog!

Where abouts do you work Emma?

Re: pitbull type dog attacks Guide dog!

I agree that there are responsible owners of this type of dog and as a breed it is extremely rare to see dog human aggression, but let me cite a few of the cases we have seen of late - and i am sure you will understand why I feel as I do.

1) 10 year old bichon (lived with rottie all his life) - throat ripped open - caroid and jugular - died in street - killed by pit bull/staff owned by young lad = off lead and aggressive ++

2) 8 year old cat killed by crush injuries - 2 american staffs living next door to client. Dog owner complained that one of the dogs suffered a scatch to the cornea during this attack.

3) Greyhound - severe bite wounds over neck and thorax - not healed 2 months later - caused by a off lead pitt mastiff puppy off lead in street - owned b y young lad.

4) Springer - severe throat injuries - owner of pitt watched attack from other side of the park and did not attempt to stop his dog. Police/RSPCA looking for this man

5) Bedlington killerd in own home. Client answered door to a girl - who released pitt into house. Beddlngtons throat - trachea etc all ripped out.Police discouraged client from making complaint as the girl would get a criminal record!

and on the flip side uncontrolled owner ship - PTS a very sad 11 month old pit bull owned by a young lad - # femur, covered in *** burns and bite wounds. Told vet that we could not return dog to owner as obv. abused, no rescue would take as a clear pitbull type. Boy could not afford fees etc. Cried over the descison we had to make.

These are some examples of why dog ownership must be controlled - and urgently. How many dogs are suffering due to no action being taken.

Re: pitbull type dog attacks Guide dog!

ha ha ha...you know me so well....and thanks!! x

Re: pitbull type dog attacks Guide dog!

I was wondering how long it would take stella to reply to this thread!! lol.. attacked so often it is hard to keep an open mind.'

it's even worse when there are poor mistaken dogs on death row through no fault of their own and the poor owners are losing a dear friend for absoultely no reason at all.

there was a case not long ago where somebody reported a man as having a dangerous dog just based purely on the way it looked, the dog had done nothing - this is where i think the dangerous dogs act and ways of dealing with complaints is total bulls**t.

has anybody ever thought that some dogs attack because they're afraid of the opponent?? some patients come in with wounds but sometimes because they were causing trouble in the first place and got their come-uppance!!! if this was a f**king Yorkie nobody would report it - if it was a Staff they'd have no problem doing so.

the dangerous dogs act was a knee-jerk reaction of the govt. to public dog attacks by GSD's in the 80's and Rottie's in the 90's which was never properly thought through. it considers dogs dangerous on their look alone - initially - there's not even such a thing as a 'pit-bull' - it's a generic term for a type of dog crossed with any bull breed!! there are loads of bull breeds out there: bull mastiffs, bulldogs, bull terriers. of all of these the terriers get the bad rap yet as somebody mentioned earlier Staffies in particular are super human friendly, baby friendly, once known as the 'nanny' dog because of how good they are with children. i know it's d**khead owners that cause the trouble but the thing that annoys me most is the appearance bias and the media distortion. do we ever hear of JRT or Yorkie attacks??? No! but they do happen!!

Re: pitbull type dog attacks Guide dog!

They showed a clip of it on the news the other day and it sent a shiver down my spine!
I agree, but it also makes me feel sad that the poor dog was hurt and still concentrated on his job. What a brave little pet

Re: pitbull type dog attacks Guide dog!

Sure you are all going to hate me for this! Enforce the dangerous dog act. I am based in greater london and see multiple dog bites wound every week - inverabily caused by pitt bulls ot pitt-staff types. These dogs in the wrong hands are lethal and sadly in this area that is where they are. This type of dog in responsible ownership is not an issue - some are great! BUT when you see dog atfter dog with hidious injury and death caused by these dogs you can not help but become biased. Sorry to all you staff owners out there but having worked through the implementation of the dangerous dogs act before I would do it again if meant that my clients and myself could walk in the local park without the constant threat and fear caused by young lads and their out of control aggresive dogs. And I am aware that the banning of staff stypes would cause great distress to valid owners - a dog licensce and contol course would be better. When you are seeing patients who through no fault of thier own attacked so often it is hard to keep an open mind.

Re: pitbull type dog attacks Guide dog!

[quote user="Bethany Leadbeater"]

Apparently even after being savaged the guide dog returned to her owner and tried to carry on working and keep her owner safe!
