For the new system (whatever that turns out to be) to be successful then it has to be practice friendly and be taken on board by the practices - if it isnt it gains nothing and there will still be the excuse its ok to use non qual staff because there is a shortage of qual nurses.

I have to stay with my practice for one year post qualification. I was really hoping my current employee would put me on 1st year NVQ as soon as I passed (providing I do!), but from what I've heard from my assessing nurses it's unlikely we'll employ any trainee nurses if the switcheroo goes ahead as planned.

This is seriously pants for me! I'm trying not to worry about it for now but I would also like to have a vague idea of my plans, particularly as I've been in full-time employment for 7 years. I really can't see it being possible for me to train as a VN without an employer behind me.

If anyone can give me some advice on my options that would be fantastic!
I am a Qualified ANA. I am due to start my new job at Companion Care on the 30th of this month. I was told at the interview that I would start my training September 2010. I went for the interview 5 weeks ago. Got a phone call to say that I will be starting now in January. Which is fantastic for me

The vet said that with the proposed new training it looks like I will be the last trainee they will be able to take on! due to the changes.

It is so difficult as even if you take a trainee job (if one could be so lucky....) then they might not want to release you for two days a week for a year, and also the 5 weeks of on the job training (if they couldn't fulfill all of the different requirements such as equine and large animal).

From a situation of tearing my hair out for 3 1/2 years looking for an SVN role, to gaining a place and losing it after 3 months through no fault of my own, it's now worse as even the practices advertising aren't sure what they can provide.
A big issue to everyone won't even be the looking for a place in the first year, it could well be how can we raise the funds to pay for the course - my local college didn't provide a grant for the SVN 1st year, and being older I didn't qualify for government training, and my practice didn't have the money to pay for me, so I was stopped from going the day before the course started!. Course fees could be steep and self-funding if not in a practice, or the practice not easily being able to keep or release staff for training may be reluctant to pay (especially as the 2nd year is intended to be a 1 year contract, so why pay for the training only for the student to leave after the training is complete?0.

Let's hope they soon put us all out of our misery so we can either continue searching for places to train, or give up the job of our dreams if it proves a bigger disadvantage than the current regime.

Re: New SVN training 2010
point taken - just dont think the vet nurse NVQ is valued high enough and is further undervalued because you dont actually have to have it to still call yourself a nurse.
I have to agree. for example an NVQ level III in Health and Social care can be obtained in as little as 6 - 12 mths dependant on which modules you take no exams or practicals required. just assessment/training within the work place. No need to attend college either.

The reason our qualification got converted to an NVQ level III was so that the entry requirements could remain the same as pre NVQ.

Re: New SVN training 2010
Personally, I don't think busy practices will want to keep changing staff every year - recycling the 2nd year. This would unnerve a lot of vets!

Most practices will surely want to train and keep their staff, create an efficient working team . This makes better business sense to me and seems to be the norm in places i've worked in. I realise there are some centres that will look for students as they are cheaper but it would be chaos if the practice i work in did this!

They might be persuaded to help with training placements for 1st and 2nd years but only if the paper work / visits / red tape is cut back from what it currently is now.
They can keep on the 2nd years aftyer qualifing though if they want! just does not hold anybody to any contracts. So if your a good trainee why would they want to loose you. At the same time if you want to leave it is easier as no claues in paying back fees!
