Whats your opinion on having a ''clinic'' animal?? We have this gorgeous little dog that came to us as a stray with 2 broken front legs. We have since pinned ans plated him and we have all fallen in love with him (even our Manager has made

Re: Clinic Animals

We have acquired a practice cat. She was brought in as a collapsed stray with the most dreadful matted hair - she was just a giant matt really - found on a building site so probbaly dumped. She is VERY ancient, and a real feisty tortie. She is hyperthyroid and not sure we will have her long as she is so ancient but the rescues were all full and wouldnt; have took her anyway so she stayed!! As she is so old she sleeps most of the time but has run of prep room and kennel area in the afternoons, and has a big kennel for rest of the time. Vet lives at the practice and has tried to take her through the house but she just meows at the door to come back through!! We hav ehad her for 5 months now, at least she has had warmth and love in her twilight years - not that she appreciates it with her tortie attitude particularly if we are trying to groom her!! Lol!

Re: Clinic Animals

[quote user="zookeeper"]

In wards? I think a cat or birds are ok-depending on the circumstances, but I´m not sure a dog would appreciate being handed from pillar to post. I´m sure you would all love him, but dogs need consistancy and regular training/exercise.

Or what happens when he´s a 5 year old and no one has the time on lunch breaks to take him for a walk? Think ahead 10 years. Will all the same staff be employed there or will the new staff be as committed to looking after him?

I think its a lovely idea, but perhaps in reality, not so practical.

If he´s a puppy, you would easily rehome him, as long as its to someone you know, so you can monitor his post-op care.

Sorry to put a downer on it

In answer to the above post, my current locum practice has a cat, the clients do love her and its lucky that she´s very sociable and confident, but I do worry about her being in reception and causing a ruckus! She pretty much has the run of the practice, but not in prep/theatre/kennels/consult rooms during the day.

Re: Clinic Animals

i can understand a practice bird in a cage or something similar but what would u do with a dog or cat, im just curious as never had any practice animals, are they able to just roam around or are they confined to recep etc. what if they walk into the room at the wrong time when ur wrestling a rottie or similar

Re: Clinic Animals

We've had practice pets at almost every practice i've worked at. At my first job, the practice cats used to sit on the reception desk and all the clients loved it! We used to get old ladies coming in every week with fresh cooked fish for them! I hope you get to keep your puppy!

Re: Clinic Animals

I don't see the problem. Especially if he has people with him at weekends/bank hols!

At my last place we had 3 practice cats and a chameleon! It was fine because the duty nurse used to look after them! I know it's a bit more difficult with a dog but I'm sure he's already used to his new living arrangements and loves the attention!

Have fun!
