The vet working at our branch surgery phoned me this pm about a puppy he had seen - presented for rabies vax. Puppy is 24 weeks old, apparently imported from an eastern European country at 5 weeks old. No passport, rabies

Re: Is this dog an illegal import???

well at least we know it wasnt a legal pup. Question is now will it be accepted at the other end without the correct vaccs? can see this dog shunted backwards and forwards with no good outcome.

Makes you wonder just how many animals are smuggled in?

Re: Is this dog an illegal import???

Phoned DEFRA - who passed us along to Trading Standards, who passed as along to animal control - London council. They sent out an inspector. Dog is indeed illegal and is being re-exported to the country it was smuggled in from. Have no idea what will happen to the dog when it gets there, or what will happen to the owner as we are not given that info. Hope the dog is found a home - after all it is not the pups fault that this has happened.

Re: Is this dog an illegal import???

We have recently vaccinated a dog which was only 8 weeks I think and gave it its first vac and the dog was to be exported to Barhamas or somthing.....but due to its age rabies was not required? Mind you after all the reserach we did for the breeder the new owner then buggered off and had 2nd vac else where. We had to order in a different manufactuer in too ...ah well...

Re: Is this dog an illegal import???

I would be interested in the outcome of this. I thought all animals had to be vaccinated etc before import in to UK and would be very surprised if we were one of the countries that does accept animals with no passport/vaccine as we are one of the few rabies free countries ( or so ive always thought?)

Export of animals under 3 months old

3.1 Some EU Member States may accept dogs and cats under 3 months of age which have not been vaccinated against rabies but are accompanied by a pet passport. Further guidance to veterinarians on the export of these animals was issued under cover of Action Note 2005/36.

3.2 If an animal is to travel direct to a country which will accept animals that are not vaccinated against rabies, then it is possible to issue a passport without vaccinating the animal. In this case, the owner must be advised that vaccination against rabies would be required if the animal were to be moved to another country at a later date.

Feel bad about the choice the owner may be faced with - i think it is pet deportation, 6 months quarentine or euthanasia. I assume the dog has arrived with out paper work as they could not afford the other options which will leave the euthanasia of a 24 week old pup as the only option. Tragic but I have no option but to report to DERFA - hate to be this person!!

Re: Is this dog an illegal import???

http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/travel/pets/index.htm

I would have thought a passport would be needed too, after all it isnt only the vaccines which lets face it are just a little bit important, its proof of worming and tick treatment etc , I suppose it could be argued it wasnt old enough to have received some of the vaccines/ treatments - but I have been wrong before. just a little query tho if it came in at 5 weeks with no vax /passport and is now wanting one where is it travelling onto ? or is it a case of getting a passport now to make it legal? wouldnt it be a little difficult to provide a passport for it now?

has this puppy entered the country via an approved route? if it has the owner should have some evidence of this - if it hasnt then I would ? it was legal but as I say I have been wrong before

is this dog identifiable at all - ie is it chipped and if so where was the chip done?
