A union would provide support to both vets, vet nurses and lay staff alike.
What do you expect of a union - in terms of what it should provide?

If so as I recall (and feel free to correct me anybody) the union would have been primarily for vets and nurses may be allowed to join at a later date. If so I personally feel it will be of little use to nursing staff

having worked in a union environment - to the extent that it was closed shop in the factories I personally would think twice about union membership. I have been a member of several and the are all pretty much the same

my views on unions and reasons can be found post dealing with the creatures scattered on this and the old forum wont bore old times with them surfice to say unions are total and at least has a use it clears the stomach dunno what good unions are other than as money making machines.

Caro! You make me chuckle!!! What's going on with you? Are you being sued or something? and feel you have to put a disclaimer after every post to cover yourself! hehe!

A union just wouldn't work in the vet business..... it's a caring profession, especially among the nurses, and yes, I would like better pay, better conditions, more appreciation for what we (nurses) do etc etc but I couldn't just stop what I'm doing because it's the end of a shift, if you are not happy with your conditions you try to move on (I know not everyones circumstances allow for this) and stipulate better conditions for your new job.... after you qualify/get older it allows you to be more forthright with your oppinions and hopefully allow you to have confidence to stand up for yourself (again I know that this is not always possible and also depends on the type of person you are).

The RCVS is also abit of a closed shop at times and this would make a union unworkable in alot of situations.

Let me give some examples:

Working conditions: - being expected to work in such a manner that you have to work all day and end up being on call all night, then are still expected to do a full day directly after the night on call, regardless if you had a 2am caesar or GDV!

being expected to manually restrain an animal whilst taking x rays

being shouted at in front of other staff members for not doing something....

but to name a few.

Fiona A, would you feel any different if a union was able to deliver?

Re: British Veterinary Union

Checked it out online; it costs around £11 per month or £132 per year to join unite. Unite is the biggest union in the UK therefore joining fees are probably kept down due to the volume of people joining. I don't think an independant Veterinary Union could provide complrehensive services for such a low membership cost.

Sorry if this shounds horribly negative but my previous experience of union was that they were good at taking the money and pretty rubbish at delivering the service!

Re: British Veterinary Union

Having worked in a unionised environment before what I would expect is that joining a union would cost a lot of my hard earned money. How much does it cost to become a member of the Unite union? (I'm off to surf to see if I can find out)

Also unions usually require a member of staff of a particular business to be the union representative, I can't see this working in vet practice as the Rep could be a receptionist, how could they then assist an assistant vet who was having a problem with the managing partner. I can't think of any other businesses that are predominantly small business based where a unionised environment exists; although I am happy to be corrected!
