I have an approx 3yr old FN rescue collie cross . Very sociable, outgoing, and generally not at all nervy.
She is however scared of fireworks, and due to a lack of preparation on my part, ended up getting diazepam this year - last year got nothing

Re: Dog nervous only after fireworks....

I would agree & big up the DAP collar, have used it for quite a while in my neurotic collie & works a treat, he is soo much calmer with it on

Little sod managed to lose it before november 5th though!!

Re: Dog nervous only after fireworks....

DAP spray only lasts 45 minutes once its been sprayed so you would be better investing in the DAP collar. AS for time on Zylkene - they must be on it for more than 1 month before you start seeing any difference. However, when my collie was on it, the rep changed the one month time scale to 3 months.

As far as the rep explained it to me, Zylkene was one protein away from milk and thats how it calms pets down, as they relax during feeding. The datasheet is very non specific and not very helpful at all. Here's a copy

Thanks for the replys. I have started her on Zylkene SID. They are ace to administer - I throw them for her, and she chases them and eats them like a treat She certainly doesn't do that with other meds- not even Drontal Plus!

So far no improvement, but we are only 2 days into tx. After observing her more, she seems to have become hypersensitised to noises in general - definatley a new behaviour since firework time!! My squeaky windscreen wipers are definatley a Scary Monster now, and she wasn't bothered previously.

After asking our vets about Zylkene, I just got a load of blank looks... (although we have it in stock!?), and it doesn't appear to have a data sheet in the box - can anyone tell me how and why it works? Did also consider getting a bottle of DAP and a bandanna to spray it on, but was put off by the £15 odd COST price! Do they not do teeny bottles of DAP like they do for feliway?

Oh and if Jenny T feels like dropping in, any advice would be muchly appreciated

I had a problem similar to this too. In the house I provided a darkened quiet area for my dog to feel safe in whilst the fireworks were going off, he was more chilled out when he had his safe area and not so worried. It did make him afraid to go out in the dark and wouldn't even go to the toilet before bed, so I didn't force him to go out in the dark. Yesterday I took the oppertunity knowing the fireworks had died off now to go out whilst it was still light but still be out walking as it got darker so he got used to it slowly getting darker to acclimatise him to the dark, this seemed to work and he was still happy walking when it was dark. Hope this helps.
