My plan would be to stay at my small animal training practice for a bit!

I have too many ties to be able to go to another practice further afield so locuming and long distance travel is out of the question for me!!

I'd say so but it does depend upon the type of practice you go for. Shortly after qualifying I went for an interview at a hospital in Berkshire and was offered a salary of £13000 so geographical location doesn't always seem to be a factor! Where I live now the salaries are generally a lot lower (meant to be a lower cost of living here too though prices are shooting up) so locuming or doing something away from veterinary nursing is the main option unless I want to live with my parents forever

Wow to the £15,000 for first year trainee!! I'm only on about £12,000!!!

We definately don't do this job for the money do we!!!

Thank you to everyone for your ranges of wage. One of our qualifieds that has been working here for a couple of months has told me not to accept less than £16,000!!

Is that reasonable?? I'm from the south east! Kent!!

Ive been qualified 6 months and till waiting for the 'pay rise' I was told I would get!

Im not full time (due to being at college for bsc) so havent got a salary

I am on £18000 pa and live in London and 3 years qualified. (No rent to pay though)

3 years ago when I first moved to England I started on £18000 in West-Sussex which was quite generous as my collegue who had worked there for at least 3 years already was on £16000.

I'm a yr qualified degree nurse and locummed for a few months but currently working in surrey and i'm on £17,500 - but i work 40hr weeks and 1:3 saturdays! Although not here for much longer - but thats another story!!

wages will vary all over the country......I was a head nurse and was only on 15500

15k for a 1st yr is fab!!!

Surrey is very expensive! thats where I work/live.

BVNA and Lantra did a survey a few years back on salaries and I think for newly qualified VNs the wage does vary between about £13-14500 which is terrible! The practice I trained at kept SVNs on a low wage (minimum wage) but increased the pay on qualification to around £17500 (in Surrey so expensive area to live) to it was a good incentive to try and pass asap to get the big pay rise!

Wow! I didnt realise how low some Qualified nurses get paid!

I know that we dont do this job for money!

I have been offered a salary of 15,000 a year for a first year trainee! so I take it thats good!

I am really so shocked at what some of you Qualified Nurses earn.

And I bet you all work bloody hard at your jobs too xxx

I agree - really depends on type of practice, area of country and any associated benefits. When I first qualified I started on £13,500 (2004) for a medium size first opinion practice, cost price tx of my animals and great bosses - but do know people who got a lot more!

I am only on £16,000 now - same practice and am doing the diploma but really enjoy the people I work with but do know nurses who work at referral pratices etc and get £20,000+ and same level of experience as me! But reluctant to change in case not so friendly and caring!

i have to say that it does vary on were abuts in the country you are working. even as a locum wages change across the country. are you north, midlands, south, london etc ?

when i qualifed i was on £12.000 a yr but didnt have to pay rent in a very expensive area.

When I left my TP, 9 months post qualifiying I was on £12,750 per year (37.5 hour week, plus 1:3 weekends) , now thats a swindle!!!! Why do we let them do it......................oh, yeah we love our job and get screwed over because of it. Don't accpet less than £14,000 per year for sure!

Well i think i'm probably being swindelled at £14,400 a year (just qualified) for 37.5hrs a week. It would be interesting to know how everyone else is doin!
