Don't underestimate how intelligent they are, I am a Brownie leader (7-11years) and they astound me by how much they know and their capacity to learn.

[/quote]

i've just given my first talks on animal welfare to an international school in indonesia, and have to say wish they were as intelligent as you say they are, to me it didn't seem like they took anything in but hopefully they are digesting it slowly and just weren't letting on!!

we just gave a basic talk on animal wealfare, telling them that a pet has the same needs as they do, the five basic freedoms. but then animal wealfare is very different here and i think british kids are clued up from a young age. most of them want to talk about their own pets, gets a bit hard to explain to a 6yo why its not sutible for her to keep a monkey!

depends on the length of your talk but throw in activities for them to do as they get restles when they get talked at for a full hour!

Good luck!

Re: Talking to the Scouts

These talks are normally really good fun! I did a talk for a Brownie group who were doing an animal care badge, and they had a list of questions they wanted to know about their own pets. Took some xrays along of weird and wonderful things, and also one of the vets dogs who they could listen to the heart, palpate pulses etc. The talk wasn't long but the time flew by. Also helped I think that we were able to get some freebies from reps for the group!

Re: Talking to the Scouts

sorry scouts

haven't a clue how old they are meant to be!

Re: Talking to the Scouts

Don't underestimate how intelligent they are, I am a Brownie leader (7-11years) and they astound me by how much they know and their capacity to learn. Be silly, have fun but don't patronise them, if they are scout scouts, not beavers or cubs, they are going to be 10 years at the youngest. Lots of pictures, any game you can devise based on animal noises/movements, its all good My mum is a Blue Cross education speaker and she gets a great reaction to fake poo in the 'why we pick up after our dogs' and the 'worms' section of the talk. Could be an idea? I think if you can make it fun for you it will be fun for them

Re: Talking to the Scouts

showing good xrays- we have a box of old ones from the film and developer days! (were now digital- oooh!)

bandaging teddy

taking a dog in and letting them listen to heart

dressing up in lab coat and arm length gloves and mask and hat- makes them look silly and they enjoy!
