As a RVN I hate all thes stupid made up breed names - a cross is a cross. I own 2 crosses which I believe would be a Pomjack and a Pekeapom - to me they are cross breeds! Yet they come with all of the breed traits and problems that one would expext with a pure bred dog of their various breeds. We see loads of clients who have paid hugh amounts for crosses with the expectation that they will be perfect with no health problems. I always register them as X-breed - much to the disgust of reception - who seem to believe these are real breeds!!

Here in Australia these designer "breeds" were popularised by a TV show called Bourke's Backyard, in which he featured a different designer breed each week. The next thing you know there's puppy mills popping up all over the place catering to all the DINKs who started buying into it. He had a resident vet who left over this silliness in protest (and good on him).

Having said that, there's a place for some specific cross breeds, for example lab x standard poodles that are finding places as seeing eye dogs for people with allergy problems who can't have a lab in the house. Unfortunately the name labradoodle seems to have stuck! The Australian labradoodle is a true fourth generational breed, though obviously with no breed standards there's a long way to go.

Such is the origin of many of our pure breeds - crosses produced to fill a particular need for a working dog until a breed standard arises. I note that this is a separate issue to the designer dog, and in this reqard the American labradoodle is not a true breed as their methods speciifically require second generation mixes that are 25% lab. In other words the American labradoodles are designer dogs.

From a purely academic POV I'm interested to see what happens in the future for the Australian labradoodle as a breed.

I'm a big fan of crossbreeds but I think it's very wrong that people spend a lot of money on "designer" breeds just because someone has given them a stupid name and made out that they are the latest "in thing". At the end of the day it's just a crossbreed and you could pick one up for a lot less money from a rescue centre without lining the pockets of these breeders who are just conning people. I'm sick of clients looking mortified when I ask what cross their lovely porkie (poodle x yorkie) that they've spent hundreds of pounds on is.

Hi, I agree its a bit mad to pay a fortune for a non pedigree dog, no papers etc, but surely in some cases its much better than a pedigree. At least the bloodlines are getting mixed a bit, so at least the owners might get a healthier dog for their money? I wish the ke3nnel club would encourage more of this!

Also, I quite like the names, cockerpoo, tottweiler, etc, they all very cute names!

I met my first 'schnoodle' yesterday... a mini schnauzer x poodle... another of those miracle puppies that won't shed apparently...

have seen a springbat! - and have to say it had very very smelly ears - and wanted to eat me (yes its ears were sore - but it was growling as soon as it got near the door before I even got near it)

It really bugs me this, 9 months ago I was trying to find myself a cross breed puppy. Im a big fan of cross breeds :-D, partially coz their a little bit cheaper in the inital outlay. So I used e-pupz and prices started at around £500, all with silly names although very cute I cant afford like some of my clients to spend £500 - £1000 purchasing a dog. Ended up going to a rescue shelter where they had a litter of cross breed puppies, not 100% sure what cross and thats were i got my Albie for £150 he came microchipped and had his first vaccine, and I got to help a charity! And compared to some puppies that I see he so far has been bullet proof and is a brill dog.

A gun dog that trips over its own ears? Doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

Ok guys I've managed to find myself a cute little cross breed that I'm hoping will fit in my cats. It's a shih tzu X pomeranian but what could we call it??!!

I'm going with a Pom Tzu, sound so much more upmarket darrrrling!

Via family, I've just heard of someone who has travelled to Wales to buy a 'special' puppy; paid £650 (!!!!!!!!!) for a GSD x something x something!!!

All the time there are people willing to buy, and the current novelty for 'designer' crosses is fashionable, people will both breed them & sell them.

However, most of the breeds we currently have have themselves originated from 'crosses', so it isn't exactly new!

Driving to work this morning I was listening the radio, they had some woman on the phone doing some sort of competition and were asking her about her dog (it was barking in the back ground). They were like "what breed is it"

I have a similar problem with my hound Jack, the doozy in the sunnies. He's a GSD x Staffie. I've had loads of people ask me what he is and they always seem disappointed when I tell them he's an honest to goodness crossbreed.

He was a mercy buy, his previous owner couldn't cope with him and the house FULL of mangey, fluey cats. £20 including a weeks worth of food and all accessories.

I've kind of kept out of this because I have a 'designer' crossbreed.....I paid something for her and she is the love of my life! But my intention was to get a small crossbreed without a docked tail... needed a pup cos I have cats, and needed to know what size would eventually be for transportation reasons and live in a small house with 4 cats. I was on the look out for a year and would have been happy with a yorkie cross but at the time they all had docked tails whic I was adament I didn't want.

Anyway she was advertised in the local free paper, went to see her and mum, and put a deposit down and collected her a day later.

She is officially a 'jug' but I suffer from a kind of inverted snobbery I think, and object strongly to when people call her this... it makes me cringe!!! So she is just my little , much loved, full of attitude, cheeky, extremely fit, down right gorjous cross-breed!

Easy people are so anxious to be "different" that they are willing to pay stupid money. They are also obsessed with "names" on items another reason to waste money.

YUCK! Some of those dogs look very weird! But if people (idiots) are willing to pay a couple of hundred quid for them, well what can I say?

We walk a bostonxpug. He is very cute and well behaved, but they paid a lot for him.

How can people charge silly money for a mongrel???

We had a Schnocker.... a Schnauzer x Cocker... so "Cross Breed, Small" is how it ended up on the computer!

We've had Labradoodle owners coming in wanting hip,elbow and eye scores for their "breeding bitches" WHAT???? Its one thing saying they are a specific breed, but breeding from 2 labradoodles? I'm no genetics expert, but couldn't you end up with a litter of 3 lab-types and 3 poodle types? In theory?

Saying that, I have a gorgeous and very individual Porkie! At least we think he's poodlex yorkie, but I tend to just call him Poo, or Poodle! He has his own Facebook page "A lengend amongst small, curly-haired, poodly-type things!" I should put some photos on here!

I do hope that wasnt at me lil.miss.hc, I am an RVN with many years experience, and note the MAY, not wouldnt have health issues, hence the reason for ALL my 4 dogs being insured with Petplan, a boxer, a JRT, a JRT X Pug, and omg..................a crossbreed collie x JRT!!!!!!

I agree with everything said here! i thought i'd seen all the weird 'breeds' but today i saw my first 'cavapoo'! Cavalier cross poodle and the lady had driven 200miles to get him. What a waste of time and money. I have a golden retriever cross collie so is he a gollie?! And true to the golden retriever in him his hips are rubbish! So much for healthier crossbreeds!
