In the practice I worked at in Canada - we used to mix a 8ml bottle of SynOtic

(Fluocinolone Acetonide 0.01% And Dimethyl Sulfoxide 60%)

with 1ml of Finadyne (Flunixin meglumine brand name Banamine in Canada) - and applied that once daily...worked great on some dogs

I got a free sample on the front of a dog magazine and strangely while i was at work one of my dogs ripped it off the front and tore open the packet (magazine was intact!) .....my dogs have never taken anything and ripped it up before

hi, thanks for the replies. the dog has skin 'issues' which flare up now and again- allergy related i think (was investigated a while back). when these flare up is when we have trouble with the granuloma as he licks a lot- prob stress related due to the fact that his skin is itchy and he is uncomfortable. he is on meds for the skin problems but it is not very clear what sets this off although it usually resolves very quickly, leaving him with a newly licked leg to chew on forever more which can be a problem to stop! dogs!

update tho- we have a dog i had these in mind for who gets lick granulomas. we tried it over a dressing as suggested by the company and it made him loads worse! the vet applied it and she is one of the ones you can trust to do things properly so buster collar for him again!

out of interest, anyone any suggestions to help with this dog... he is a 6yo male ess with no other problems but these blimmin lick grans and its driving us mad not been able to help!

Hi, out of interest why does the dog have lick granulomas? If it is stress-related then using these patches are a really bad idea. I nearly posted this opinion when Arlo posted about this product but then never got around to it.

I am not sure whether this will be of use to you or not but here goes just incase.

Any animal that is stressed needs, for its own wellbeing, to find a way to ameliorate/reduce its stress levels. This is it's way of coping with the unfavourable environment that it finds itself in. Finding a way to cope is associated with a reduction in stress hormones and, sometimes, an increase in pleasure chemicals in the brain. Stereotypic / obssessive-compulsive disorders fit this category. If the dog is licking itself as a way of coping with the stressful environment it perceives itself to be in then a) preventing it from licking itself fullstop and/or b) making it unpleasant to lick the site will simply make the dog more stressed. If it has seriously injured itself then, yes, there is a case for stopping it from licking itself in the interim period but alongside that needs to be a robust behavioural modification programme and, probably, drug therapy initially to address to root cause of the problem otherwise simply preventing the dog from licking will, in an already really stressed dog, make it alot worse - although it might simply form another lick granuloma elsewhere on its body.

However, sometimes, OCD /stereotypic behaviour (and licking to the point of granuloma formation sometimes (but not always - there may be a non-behavioural explanation for it) can be defined as broadly fitting this catergory) is not always a reflection of the animal's current emotional state but a reflection of the fact that an animal's environment was bad in the past, it learnt to cope in a particular way in the past and now this has just become a regular part of this animal's behavioural repartoire. So, sometimes an animal may continue to show abberrant behaviour even though its welfare outwardly now appears good (e.g. rodents housed in crap environments that develop stereotypic jumping behaviours continue to perform these behaviours even when they are moved into housing that is enriched and which, had they been housed in this environment all along they would never have developed stereotypic behaviours). However, it is usually best to assume that the animal is licking because it finds some aspect of its environment stressful and investigate/treat accordingly. If your vet (or you) in anyway suspects that the licking has a behavioural and not a medical cause I would get behavioural assistance from a veterinary behaviourist as this most likely the best way forward.

One of my dogs has granulomas and these flare up under stress too.

May be worth testing his thyroid - hypothyroidism can cause skin/ear problems and if everything medical has been ruled out it may be worth trying Zylkene

PS new to this so I may have posted this more than once - can't quite get the hang of the 'quote' bit

Hey there - just something worth mentioning - we had an overweight lab approx 7yrs of age and he kept getting lick granulomas and had a history of ear problems, we tested his thyroid as hypothyroidism causes the above side effects - test results showed he was in fact hypothyroid! Also if it is due to stress and other medical ailments have been ruled out maybe worth trying Zylkene?

I'm confused, do you stick it over the sutures or hot spot etc? Wont the adhesive affect the skin/wound underneath? I might be being thick but the website doesn't make it very clear....
