Can anyone explain Cox-2's to me please. I'm getting them confused with a million other things and my brain is a bit mangled for today

Re: Cox-2

The new Onisior from Novartis is meant to target the COX-2 which in turn will be better NSAID pain relief for cats and dogs that might have been affected negatively by the inhibition of the COX-1 enzymes causing renal and GI problems or for whom already have preexisting problems in theory. I've been thinking about using is as an alternative to keeping Trouble on the steroids long term for her OCD in her hip from the RTA she had a couple years ago. She responded well the the Meloxicam but I didn't like her blood results after using it for a few months, even only every other day. She's managing alright at the moment on 1mg SID every other day and .5mg on the other days in the PM.

Re: Cox-2

[quote user="Maisy"]

From what I gathered Cyclooxygenase is responsible for things like prostaglandins which are all involved in inflammatory reponses. COX-1 is found all over the body and so can affect the GI system, renal function etc whereas COX-2 are present primarily are sites of inflammation so inhibitors will reduce toxicity to these areas deeming them more 'safe'.

Hopefully someone can explain in better detail though!
