Really interesting question!

I think the best thing is just to ignore unless the request comes from someone you really WOULD like to make contact with.

For some people that cannot find that forgiveness it doesnt necessarily mean they are holding a grudge - it may mean that they have been very hurt by something a person has said or done in the past and remembering a past event and how it worked out they are then scared to take a chance with this person again. Not what I would call holding a grudge.

this sums things up for me very eloquently

'The Gestalt Prayer

I do my thing, and you do your thing

I am not in this world to live up to your expectations

You are not in this world to live up to mine

You are you and I am I

And if by chance we find each other, it's beautiful

If not it cant be helped '

They realize when they get to a certain age and they don't have any friends that maybe it might be something they're doing wrong so they grasp at what ever they can to try and stay sane. Sad but all too common. They may have felt really bad about how and what they did and just weren't able to cope with seeing you yet.
