I used biros at work all the time for convienence but remember having to use fountain pens at school and loved the pop it made when you put in a new ink cartridge.

I also remember people collecting the little balls from the top after the cartridge had finished.

Fountain pens remind me of school plus they used to leak all over me and I'd go home looking like the little blue intel pentium man...

I'm much better off with a pencil

bit off subject but thought I would give an update on the person on my course - I was totally grossed out when he used a cocktail stick to pick his nose yesterday. even the tutor commented on 'just how far can you get that up yer nose without impaling yer brain!'

today we did our hygeine certificate - and during the tutoring bit this morning we used some of the u/v revealer which shows how well/badly people wash their hands. Can I just say that one person had hands that will glow in the dark for many days to come. There was a big rush at lunch to get to the buffet before somebody else did. Not because there was a food shortage - was just to grab some food before anybody else touched it

Lol Caro, don't think i'll beat that! I've got a desk with a 3 drawer bit, a cupboard, a 3 shelf book case, a 6 shelf book case and a shelf thing that the monitor sits of, which also has storage spaces. So got a lot to fill! My main thing is pens, although i do have a drawer FULL of notepads, will never get through them all! Esp as i am a fan of tearing up scrap paper to use rather than just throwing it away!

One desk with 2 book cases on it and 2 draws under it lot of stuff stored under the stairs oh and small 3 draw plastic on desk and computer screen still just one desk though

No just boxes to store the spare pens in and a couple of bookcases for the notepads (can always use more esp. alphabetised ones) There is passwords book, address book, books/series have read, and about 6 others ABC books best. And one or 2 other little items lying around rulers, pencils, rubbers, paper pads (small tear off) paper pads, ruled large pads just things sort of collect

Caro, i am stationary obsessed too! My college pencil case is full of different coloured highlighters and pens...it will be a shame when i stop going to college cos i won't have an excuse to buy stationary, it will all just build up!

Sal, that is GROSS I presume you'll be keeping your own pen on you now?!

that does not sound nice!!!

I used to looove writing with fountain pens. Always wrote with one as soon as i went to comp. my writing is so much neater writing with a fountain pen, the only thing is is that biros are so convenient with work

love proper ink pens - I can also remember those little white inkwells and the ink monitor .

just to put everybody off biros - today I sat behind somebody who used the end of a biro to dig the wax out of his ear! couldnt help but see it I was sitting about a foot behind him. Soon after I saw him chewing the end of the same pen - presumably quite tasty with earwax condiment

and then it gets worse - he put the biro with its chewed end back in the pen tub for some poor bugger to use the next time - but I suppose at least it was only his ear and not his nose he was digging out

We had to use fountain pen in junior school, i HATED it. Being left handed i used to smudge my writing, and my pens always leaked and were scratchy. My writing was awful with them! I like a nice biro, not a bic, but one that has a rubber bit to hold so it's comfy! I seem to remember people keeping the little plastic balls from the empty cartridges for some reason, can't remember if i was one of those people.

Oh you can write badly with a fountain pen!!! my dad and my brother whatever they write with it looks like a spider has crawled across the page.

I personally hate them, I really really can't write with them so when I could I stopped using them and went onto roller balls

At Hannah's primary school, the P7s get a leaving present, so as chairperson of the PTA I got to pick the pressie this year. I chose a fountain pen & pencil set and the flak I got for that was unbelievable. Since getting it Hannah's writing has improved because I don't think you can write badly with a fountain - it doesn't let you!! She feels very grown up when using it!

I remember using fountain pens at school... wen i moved to hampshire from dorset when i was 10, i had to finish year 6 in a new school. So on my first day we had to write something in our english class and so i get out my biro pen and everyone around me starts shouting saying to the teacher im being naughty and only people in the fountain pen club can use pens, everyone else in year 6 and the school i think had to write in pencil. OMG, how lame was that... This was a C of E school and seemed quite strict but my mum said that this was a silly rule for 10-11 yr olds to write in pencil unless they been to a handwrting club to gain the special fountain pen.LOL.

I used them now and then throughout secondary school, but i now stick to my biro pens,lol

I used to love getting my new fountain pen at the beginning of the new school term in September - was the highlight of my summer picking one and for some reason my writing was only ever neet when I used a fountain pen!

when I learnt to write at primary school we were given pens that were just a handle with disposable nibs that went scatchy really quickly. We had to dip them into ink that had been filled into little white ceramic pots by an ink monitor.they sat in a hole on our desks.[ the pots I mean , not the ink monitor] We were taught to write in italics fashion. we were given little bits of pink blotting paper to soak up the mess!! Wow I have just had a nostalgic moment. I can smell the ink and see the stained cupboard with all the titchy pots . Jeez old age is just around the corner.

we used to have to use fountain pens at school and im not that old!!!! (24)

we used to flick ink everywhere and i remember once we flicked it straight across the upper body/ face of our VERY strict english teacher in a diagonal line and he didn't notice until break when another teacher mentioned it!

there was flames from his nostrils and we all got detention for not owning up!! and he was wearing a white shirt that day! he he

I like the way they look when they are written with properly. But I can't seem to keep them steady in my hand long enough when I write. the longer I write the lazier my hand gets and by the time i finish my essay it looks like chicken scratch and i have pen all over my hand! lol I really like calligraphy too. I tried to learn how to do it once but I didn't get very far.

I love fountain pens too!! You can get funky coloured cartridges now too, like purple and turquoise!! We used to write with them at school, wasn't compulsary but was preferred. I sitll love them, although my old one has just broken and started leaking eveywhere

I went to a boarding school and it was compulsory to write with a fountain pen! Being left handed and a bit of a clumsy writer when I was younger meant the tip got damaged more and the pen went scratchy. We'd keep spare ink cartridges in our pencil cases and more often than not, ended up popping the top of the cartridge so hands were often covered in ink
