well its too late to worry about what might happen now as the consultation deadline has passed - suppose will just have to wait and see.

one major point that concerns me - see the article under whats new tab 'SPVS senior officer working to restructure VN training'

The mission/aims of SPVS (from their own website) 'to protect and promote the status and privileges of veterinary surgeons who earn their living as practising veterinary surgeons'

Doesnt mention anything about protecting the status and priviledges of veterinary nurses anywhere?

I remember filling out a SPVS survey on veterinary nurse wages and hours in the 90's - those of us that bothered at the time really thought - at last somebody is bothered that we are being treated like skivvies and paid sweat shop rates. The reality - well certainly at places I worked, the results of the survey were used by employers to work out the lowest wage they could get away with in their locality. Have been a bit sceptical ever since of anything carrying a SPVS label (rightly or wrongly)

Look on the bright side whatever happens it has to be better than the NVQ which has virtually killed off nurse training in the first place

Our practice is currently a TP and I think they'll pull out of training if this new scheme takes over cus they're not going to want people for just a year - every year starting from scratch with someone knew who has to shadowed and aided for the first few months at least! No way, they'll pull out for sure, as I think other practices may - which means they'll be even less placements for the new course than there is for the current system!

I think its rediculous

Me too, if it does go the way they proposed, I have no choice but to do something else. Considereing I've never wanted to do anything other than work with animals, i really don't know what i'm going to do. I am terrified. I just want to mend the squidglings......

There's really no point in worrying at the moment! Once all the proposols have been put through, and the new training scheme is set, all the questions will be answered about what to do in your situation. However it is likely to be at least January I'd have thought by the time this comes about.

I have tried not to think about this too much! But I have a few worries. I left uni with the nvq2 and am looking for a traning practice in scotland to continue with nvq3. So if i am looking and don't secure something by the time this new training comes into places does it mean starting at the strart again? If so, I guess a career change is in order! A bit worried now!

I did the first portfolio through l am glad it was back then because l do not think that what is going to come will be fair for students as they won't get a decent training. OK mine may have been frot and anal but it was/is a hell of a lot better than what is proposed.

Ahh this sounds awful! Sounds to me like there's going to be a lot of 2nd year trainees who know the theory but don't have much hands on experience...and I've had a lot of trouble with portfolio over my first year, I like the idea of an e-portfolio and I think there should be something in place that we work on. Also, what's happening with the equine side of it? Is it included in the whole course or is it still a separate qualification? And does anyone know how it will affect students just now, on the 4 year degree course? Thanks!

I think a incentive for practices to become TPs is to get 'free' nurses...how many practices will want to pay students with very little experience, who will only be there for a year. I know my practice wouldn't be doing that!!

I wonder how this whole thing will effect employed students like me in the future....do they have to do LA work? what if they aren't in mixed practice....obv they will have to get a few weeks off to do this adding to time they are away from practice....again not pleasing the bosses.

If you read the proposal on the RCVS website it sounds quite good, but info from VNAC is worrying.... ie log not being assessed therefore no proof students can actually do tasks they are saying they can do!

Practices will only advertise for students if they have staff vacancies for them - no matter what the time of year.

I too am green book trained and it was very hard work! I agree with Sal - no one block signed at my training practice, our HVN was very strict and only signed if she had seen you do something or had it on good authority that you had. Quite frankly i think its insulting to say any different. I agree it needed modernising but the NVQ just went too far and became difficult and time consuming in practice. Added to this are the numerous and often difficult iv reports and visits, almost like no one trusts anyone anymore!!

The NVQ has undergone a lot of changes over the past few years and is now much more user friendly which is one of the reasons my current practice wants to train again. We also have a very good, practice friendly iv!!

The green book exams were very hard - 2 x 3hour long papers with practicals where you could be asked anything on the syllabus - not a set of pre arranged and downloadable tasks. Very often the examiner would have your practical book with them and would ask you questions on what was in it - you either knew it or you didnt.

Its going to be interesting to see what happens. I'm not sure farm and equine will work as there just won't be the placements, though i have to admit it would loved to have had the opportunity as a trainee to have done this

I've been an auxillary nurse in practice for 6 years. Just completed my ANA and was ready to go on to complete my NVQ... does anybody know what this means for someone like me? Would I have to find different practices to complete the suggested new sections (equine and pet shop etc) or do this 'on loan' from my current practice? Any suggestions would be a great help. Ta

Hi All

I have spoken to my college today where I am starting the NVQ in January.

I was told that If you start NVQ 2 in January then you will be doing the NVQ 3 after same as what is done at the moment. I thought that as they were changing the system next summer it would change when you then go on to the 2nd year.

So I am very happy.

Do you think that we will see more veterinary practice's advertising for trainee's to start college in January?
