I was just wondering if anyone would give me their opinion. I know a fair bit about zylkene but not so much about DAP.

I have a dog who will not get into the car and is scared of travelling in it but it is just one particular car. He is fine will any other cars just not this one. i know that zylkene will help him in the car and getting into and will also help us to train him to go in it willingly. However I was wondering wether this is better than the DAP spray in this situation.

[/quote]

Hi Yorkie

I am the technical vet responsible for Zylkene, and have also used it in practice as well.

Zylkene is proven to help manage stress so certainly it may be useful in your situation. I have used it for dogs that don't travel well - very successfully. We do always advocate behavioural modification as well so contacting a behaviourist as has been suggested would certainly be a good idea.

Also - it is known that being less stressed does aid learning so using Zylkene durin g the behavioural modification should make your dog more receptive.

As for which is better - DAP or Zylkene - it is impossible to say. They both act in a different way - however there is nothing against using both together.

Hope that helps.

Re: DAP v Zylkene

I did the lincoln uni pheromone course and my case study was a dog with car phobia leading to vomitting. I used a DAP spray, on a bandanna around the neck as well as in the car. We initially only used to go and stand by the car and play a game or give a treat, never pushed him only took him as close as happy, then moved onto getting in and out of car, turning on engine, puling off drive etc etc, . Took a long while but now fine but very dedicated owners who did things with him at least if not twice every day and young dog so maybe a bit easier. It shoud be a very controlled level of exposure and loads of hard work, a beahvourist would be good to plan things - lincoln uni do consults via phone etc I think for cases like this, why nt contact them.

Re: DAP v Zylkene

Hi Yorkie,

I have been having a think about
your situation and I think you should speak to a behaviorist. I would
suggest getting in touch with the APBC on 01386 751151 or at info@apbc.org.uk. They will be able to
suggest someone in your region qualified to help you.

If the dog only has a problem
with one car you are probably going to need to go though desensitization and counter-conditioning
as this sounds like a more complicated issue than straight travel problems. D.A.P. can help with this process, but is unlikely to be a one stop cure.

Sorry this is probably not what
you wanted to hear.

Lucy

As he will read your body language towards/against the car.
Im really just looking for something that will help us to train him to go in it willlingly and wondering which was best.
