Further to my original post -

We normally get 1/2 an hour for lunch which is unpaid. But I've just been informed that I don't get paid lunch breaks even when these are overtime. For example, the other day that I was supposed to work 9am - 1pm, but then had to do 1pm - 7pm at the other branch I wouldn't normally have had a lunch break as I was meant to finish at 1pm. To me, any time worked after 1pm is overtime as I wouldn't normally be there and therefore even though I took lunch I it should have still been paid, am I right?

Quite right Button, no point staying somewhere you're not happy!

We were told that any overtime that we were asked to do would be paid time and a half, but any that we weren't specifically asked to do (i.e. clinics running over etc) we would get time off in lieu. However, as there are so few staff members here its really, really difficult to get that time back, so you end up doing it for nothing in most cases.

Recently I was asked if I'd be happy to do some overtime to cover for a staff member at our branch practice being on holiday. I said ok and was put down for 12 1/2 hours extra that week (so I worked 52 1/2 hours in total). When I checked the rota for the next week I noticed I'd been put down for overtime that I hadn't been asked about (I was meant to have a half day finishing at 1pm but had been put on the rota as 9 - 1 here then 1 - 7.30pm at the other practice. I told my boss that I couldn't do that afternoon and he said I would need to arrange with the only other nurse myself and see if she would work extra. In the end I did it cause I didn't want to have to get someone else to cover - I would have felt too guilty to enjoy my afternoon off. I feel like I've been manipulated into doing overtime that I hadn't agreed to, and its just being taken for granted that we'll do whatever hours we're given. I know overtime is part of the job and I don't mind doing my fair share but this doesn't feel right

Yep!

I think I have info sheets from citizens advice somewhere in an email but all info is on website. Let me know if you want them forwarding.
We regularly give time back, especially at weekends. For example we work 9am-5pm saturday and sunday and do on call for inpatients and emergencies inbetween. Say we got called into work at 10pm sat and worked til 12am, there is only 9 hours until the satrt of the next shift (9am sun). Therefore on the monday we would give that nurse 2 hrs time back, which has to be paid and has to be given as soon as is practical.
Citizens advive were super helpful when we were sorting our rotas out.

i think you will find out that by law you do not HAVE to sign the opt out it is your choice.

If you google the working time regulations, you should find the information you need. Been on here a lot the last couple of days as I want to work more hours!!!

I have to sign an opt out form to say Im willing to work more than a 40hr week. Do you work alot of hours?
