It def is one of the worst bits of the job, having to tell someone their beloved pet is dead I really don't envy vets having to give bad news to owners.

Found a black and white female cat lying dead under my car this morning! Was lying close to my front driver side wheel against the curb.
Didnt really fancy knocking on doors at 7.45am, but i did have an inkling whose cat it was, but had no collar. Laid it boot of my car and drove to work where i had my that it had a chip. It did!

When i got the details, the surname and address i knew that it was my neighbours cat, and my car wasnt parked that far from their house.

Called them and told them the news, possible RTA, as severly fractured hind leg. The owner came later into practice and asked to speak to me, and said thank you and he would like to take his cat, 'angel' home with him.

Took angel out to him wrapped up and he said thank you again and asked what i thought had happened... I nearly cried but held it together...

So sad... first thing on a monday morning as well...

Aww poor kitten, that's unusual for such a young kitty to have a tumour

Its rubbish, we had six month old kitten in yesterday absolutely gorgeous and really affectionate. Had a tumour on his throat and was struggling to breath, we GA'd him and he went blue couldnt intubate but did a tracheostomy but it was not possible to remove it cos it went under the hard palate and was around the trachea. Always happens to the nice ones.

And then today I got told I might be made redundant due the economy :( arrrggghhh

Hi. I think as a cat owner I would want to know rather than the awful uncertainty of will it come back one day. Micro-chipping is a great idea and, as a Cats Protection Branch Co-ordinator, we chip all cats in our care. But it does depend on some kind person taking the trouble to take a cat to a vet to be checked. Sadly most people would not even think of it. So all credit to you for taking the time and trouble, however distressing for you.I moved house, because I had two cats killed on a road. I now live in the middle of nowhere and have had two cats killed on the road. but I certainly would not keep my cats indoors. They have a lovely life with me, spoilt rotten and able to roam over miles of countryside.

I had one of these last week, was awful. woman started screaming down the phone. Man came down to the surgery and they had only recently had the cat as a replacement for their other cat who had been PTS. Horrid part of the job.

Hey, thanks for the replies guys. Our lovely vet phoned the owner for me cos she could tell i didn't really want to do it! They were really thankful i'd picked him up. His name was Benji. They were really shocked but pleased to know. Thankfully we could tell them we think it must have been quick for the kitty, as he had head injuries and was on side of road so hadn't crawled far. I'm so so glad he was chipped. If he hadn't been i'd have been putting signs up all around my estate tonight.

Was just going to say the same Carol but you've beaten me to it. It's going to be awful for them to hear the news but in the long run, much better than always wondering (as a pal of mine still is after 8wks!)

I've had to do this on a couple of occasions.
Worst though are the ones without chips and although you leave descriptions everywhere they are never claimed - that's the ones that upset me most.
At least the owner can get closure by knowing or even seeing their poor dead kitty, it's those that people didn't care enough about to want to know if they just disappeared that get me in tears.

I found a ginger tabby one news years eve, middle of nowhere.

Few months later another ginger tabby got hit right in front of me, horrible man just drove off, i jumped out and tried to save him, but he was a mess. I then had to go round knocking on doors, i found the lady and it was heart breaking....

aw thats really sad, have had to do similar things myself and your right its one of the worst parts of the job. hope it goes ok and that the rest of your day is a bit more cheery
