I've always wanted a GSD but at the moment I have my elderly staffie and I don't know if it'd be fair to inflict a puppy on her (especially since there

Re: Puppy!

I think you have made the right decision Jo, however hard it seemed at the time. The reason I say this is because I always looked after my friends Burnese Mountain Dog if she ever went on holiday, I had him once for 3 weeks while they were in the Falklands. He and my old Labrador, Tom, did not get on at all - they were both male one entire and one neutered and absolutely hated the sight of each other.

Anyway, Chino, my friends dog stayed with us for 3 weeks and the night after he went home to his owners, my beloved Labrador, 'Tom' died in his sleep.

Of course it was a peaceful death for Tom and it took the pts decision away from me, he had been totally healthy so it was very unexpected.

My problem was I felt I had subjected Tom to Chino for the last 3 weeks of his life, where Tom was unhappy having him around. That thought still haunts me to this day and its almost 10 years ago.

Thats why I think you have made the right decision.

Re: Puppy!

We've been thinking good and hard over the weekend and I don't think we're going to take her Just don't think it'd be fair on Gypsy at the moment, got to be responsible about this one lol. When my SBT was getting on a bit, I got a female puppy & he hated her. He always got on well with other dogs normally, but he took himself off upstairs & would not come down (he isn't even normally allowed upstairs!) he wouldn't eat & was thoroughly miserable for 2 weeks before we made the heart breaking decision to give her up. From the minute we got home & she wasn't with us, he was back to normal. Little sod! Anyway, we didn't get another until he was gone. Every one is different though, but your older one has to be a priority. Good luck, whatever you decide.

Re: Puppy!

Is there anyway you could introduce them just to see how they get on?

Re: Puppy!

It depends how you think Gypsy would react to have a little pup in the house really. Some older dogs can rejuvenate a little when a youngster comes to live with them, but I know my old dog was past that stage-if I'd brought a pup home I think he'd have packed his bags and left home!!

Without wanting to sound mean, I think I'd wait. There are always GSDs looking for homes so when the time is right you'd not have long to wait.
