I had one come down about 2 weeks ago at about 1 o clock in the morning - was in with us for 3 days afterwards and their bill was about £1600 - this was an obese bull mastiff mind - our gdv ops start at £600 (think we charged £1000) plus anaesthetic costs plus ooh consult, plus the augmentin, metronidazole hosp fees and iv fluids (think it had 4/5 bags- stupid thing kept chewing them out grrrr). We didnt bother with bloods before hand as we knew it was a gdv and was rather critical when it came in.

OMG! My boss would have some sort of nervous breakdown if we charged his precious clients that much. Ours would be way under £500. No wonder I haven't had a payrise in 2 years!!

Don't forget to add on the extra complication you can get with gdv and they happen fairly often.

Haven't seen one in a while but my last practiced charged a minimum of £1000 basic and then extra for hospitalisation. This would be the higher end of the scale for the classic large breed dogs, surgery alone including gastropexy would normally be around £600.

Without any OOH call out fees etc a rough estimate would be £400-500 depending on the weight of the dog for drugs/anaesthetic etc.

our basic soft tissue surgery time is £312.23 per hour. We have a £78.06 per hour sur charge for operating out of hours.

Hello,

I have just done a simple est here for GDV surgery taking aproximatley 1 hr happening OOH.

We charge a surcharge for every hour performing surgery OOH as well as a vet call out fee and a nurse call out fee.

The estimate also inclueds 2x 1litre saline drips, synulox, augmentin, metacam, vetergesic (x 4 dosages 8hrs apart), biosyn, full inhouse biochemistry, haem and electrolytes and nurse intensive care charge for the imediate post op period. (this est will cover the first 24hrs of care/ treatment etc)

the total is £1100

The fee should be based on working out what the surgery cost (from start to finish, including time and consumables) and then adding a profit. As you said, everyone's overheads are different and so an OOH provider costs more than a daytime GP, middle of London rents higher so costs higher, etc....

She must have a standard fee for her surgical time for other ops????

I spoke ot my old practice and £250-350 didn't include nursing care etc, just my memory being c**p!! So after speaking with my friend again and getting the whole story plus reminding her that she is not a charity we came to the lovely figure of £627.50, not including following consults or meds to go home with. The costs for the practice aren't as high as many mainland practices so this kept the cost down a little, but I think it's a repctable and exceedingly reasonable price and I can't persuade her to push it any higher (yes, modest vets do exist!!). Thank you all so much for your help!! I'm finding that the forums are a resource I should have started using a long time ago, both professionally and personally.

Also agree with Caro, someone up there is having a laugh!! Maybe it was "......and on the seventh day god decided to have a giggle dreaming up messy, tiring and emotionally draining ways to torture those with the biggest sense of compassion and duty. And so the veterinary nurse was made!"

ditto to the above based on one last night and on my last shift over the 4 nights/days when l was last on 8 days ago we had 4 come in god knows why there is so many dgv in the nw god must find it fun to dump the messy bloody op on us.

Hi! £250- £350 sounds cheap to me, especially if hosp care included. Does she have a price for each minute of surgical operating time? We do,so would price up for 8mins or in yourcase 90mins op time plus drugs/fluids/ hospitalisation/ meds etc. It would be some good nursing time in there

We would charge around a £1000 for GDV surgery although this would generally include and vet and nurse call out as we tend to get these at the dead of night, so without those would probably be at least £750/£800 during the day time, sorry can't give a breakdown as not at work at the moment.

that would be far too cheap based on places Ive worked! I am not sure how you could make enough money to even cover your costs?

At the moment I work in an OOH practice so it is a bit more expensive, but we charge about £1500 ish, depending on what is needed and how sick the animal is.

Even in day practice I would think at ;east £900-1200. what does everyone else charge?

thats for bloods, ivft, analgesia, gaseous ana, surgery time, suture material, hosp, nursing time, initial cons, any colloids etc needed. bair hugger, multiparameter monitoring, antibiotics, gastric protectorants etc etc.
