So far I haven't had to do anything regarding tax etc, but I've kept copies of invoices that I give to practices, receipts for petrol/books/CPD etc in a folder so that I have everything to hand come the end of the tax year. You can do your tax returns online which I have been assured is straight forward (!), however as long as you keep records of all work done, you shouldn't have a problem.

Re: Is it time to move on?

[quote user="Maisy"]

I left my long term job in the summer to start locuming as it was something I'd always wanted to try-I love it and would recommend it! There is a lot of work around, more so if you're willing to move around the country, and the demand is higher in the south east especially. It's interesting to work in different practice, I've been with the PDSA, a busy 1st opinion/ referral hospital, and 1 vet/1VN practices so always a change. If you don't really like where you're at, at least you don't have to stay long!

I'm with Carlton Professional and Northern Locums and am self employed. Some agencies will work with umbrella companies so they arrange tax/NI for you but I prefer the self employed option personally. Only downside of course is you don't get holiday/sick pay, but overall the pay can work out better than in permanent positions especially if you work solidly! If you were to sign up with an agency many have positions that start from January so you wouldn't have to wait long.

I'm really enjoying it and would recommend everyone to try it

Do most positions come with accommodation? I am about an hour away from london so not to far but don't fancy having to commute all the time. I went to quite a few different practices during my uni placements and found this really interesting. Is it hard to be self employed regarding paperwork and things like that?
