For me it isnt just the amount of money and effort spent on saving animal that is so interbred it is wide open to disaster it is also the lack of natural habitat and food. Is it right to save an animal that in all probability will spend its life in captivity? - the whole thing to me smacks of a freak show. Realisticaly what kind of a life is that animal going to have? And I know there are some good zoos and conservation programmes - and I know equally there are some very bad ones

Maybe a little off the subject but it doesnt sit very well with me that a country that allows the disgrace that is bear farms is spending so much effort in preserving an animal that has no future

I agree with conservation of species that have a reasonable chance of survival but not at the cost of other species sharing the same environment.

Re: Meds for a lil squirrel...

I totally agree.

Look at the millions that have been spent conserving 'flagship' species. Sadly, despite that cost we are going to lose the panda, the tiger and the orang u tan.

We have to be sensible and save what habitat we can and thereby save the species, however small, living in it.

Emma is exactly right.

Re: Meds for a lil squirrel...

I do see where he is coming from though, as bad as it comes across.

Panda's are in such low numbers, pumping in all the money in the world will be unlikely to save them. Even if we keep the numbers up, the genetics will be so similar any serious disease will be likely to kill them all. Cheetahs are in a similar situation.

It sounds hard, but if you study Ecology it starts to make you think, would the money be better spent on animals we have a better chance of saving?

Ever heard of Chris Packham? He gives a great viewpoint on tolerance. He says "

48% land mammal species in UK are non-native
Pity that, because it immediately makes forty eight percent of our terrestrial mammal fauna non-natives, and so presumably if the Grey squirrels have to go then so do all the rabbits, hares, four of our six deer species and so on. That's going to be a bit expensive then, better put the helicopter gun-ships on standby, and of course it will leave us with a lot less mammals and completely balls up the communities of other creatures which have adapted to live with these ‘incomers' since they arrived. Mr Buzzard will miss those rabbits and I can't see Mrs Public being too happy about the extermination of Fallow deer and all their little Bambi's.

But I'm being silly of course we make exceptions for nice animals, it's only the horrible ones we want to ecologically cleanse"

We are supposed to be a caring profession.

Re: Meds for a lil squirrel...

We had a grey squirrel in 2 days ago, an impressive little thing.
