Hi Sally,

just read this and want to offer my sympathies....hope you are feeling better and i'm sure that you you nursed both of these poor cases with the true dedication and empathy that us Vet Nurses do! Keep up the good work and hope someone reported the dog owner to the RSPCA!

We have Kate who is really Kathryn but once worked with another Katherine so changed. We have a Katie who is really Kate but we already have a Kate (see above). We have Flo who is really Victoria and a Jez who is really Jeremy. Boss Steve used to get called Frank, cant remember why! Best one is Norma, real name Paula, named after Norman Bates!!

Dick = Vick
Beaver = Eva
Rolph = Harris
Soya Bean = Shawyer

The Big Dick was also a Vicky, couldn't have two Dicks, she was older than me so Big and me Little!

I have a work name (used by the nurses)...Dick. It used to be Little Dick, because there was also a Big Dick. Now Big Dick has left, so i'm just Dick. New members of staff find it very amusing! None of the nurses have real names!!!

We have Dick, Beaver, Rolph and Soya Bean!

I always get Sharon or Susan, even though I tell peeps my name............... 2 secs later they call me the aforementioned, i usually just answer now as i cant be assed correcting them, it is funny though when they get to know me and realise my name is actually sandra

Yipeeee finally someone has worked out how to spell my name the way l grew up having it said (if that makes sense?). l did my head in trying to get people to say "ca" when we came over to uk. l did not think it was difficult but everyone over here did

Then a friend of mine said he was going to use caro as carolyn is to long and he could never pronounce ca. So l gave in and went with the flow.

My full name with 7 letters is miles to long for any sane person to bother with and anyhow they always get confused by the ending. I wish l had a pound for every time anyone has asked me if it is caroline or carolyn. My usual comment is "call me pretty much anything l will answer even if you are swearing".

If I thought the incident was an 'accident' or something the kids had done as a one off, then I would treat the pet and say nothing to the authorities, however, I would speak to the parent regarding the childrens tx of the pet and that it is/was cruel and uncalled for.

However, if I thought it was a deliberate act of cruelty and there was even the slightest possibility it may happen again, then thats a whole different story and I would act according to the individual case.

This obviously depends on the circumstances. The kids put an elastic band round the dog's neck - stupid but kids.....

The welfare problem was with the adult's failure to notice. I don't think this was deliberate cruelty in the way that could be called abuse. Unless it is repeated. In which case maybe it was the adults all along......

Obviously if I suspected an animal was being hurt deliberately and this would continue, they would be reported. And I would happily stand up in court.

As always, and as with kids, common sense must prevail.

That's a tough one to call though. Although I agree that this was cruelty, at least the dog was brought for medical attention. If vets get known as the 'police' of the animal welfare world, then people are going to be too scared of prosecution to bring their animal to us.

yes, I agree with Gillian on this one. I would prefer we see the animal and treat it as opposed to the owner being 'afraid' to come for treatment in case we report them.

What would you rather? treat the animal and say nothing, or have the animal suffer for fear of us reporting them for cruelty? Definitely a tough call though I know which one I would prefer.
