If you know so much then you should know better than sending someone with such a lack of computer knowledge to a site to post for help on sorting a computer registry. No matter how good they[site] are or think they are. Nor should you be sending messages on what to do based on your or your husband feelings ditto.

To send her into her registry is the same as sending a 1st year vet student a Fossum and telling them to pick an operation and follow what Fossum says.

l doubt that people in general realise just how dangerous it is to go in there unless you know exactly what you are doing. A computer shop is not particularly expensive around £35 especially

Sorry Steph but l feel you are way out of line to make that offer. No one except someone that knows exactly what is happening in a registry should go in there. You may know or may fancy you know but that is a very dangerous offer to make and for anyone to accept without knowing your depth of knowledge. Nor should anyone go onto a forum or any sort and ask anyone for advice on what to do inside the registry. Back to the above comment.

If there is a problem then she needs to go to a computer shop that has been recommended locally and get them to sort it. Anything that goes wrong is then up to them to sort out at their expense.

[/quote]

excuse me? I think you are confused. the bleeping computer website is a very very well known help site for those having computer trouble. some of the best geeks on the planet are on there. i was not offering to sort her registry i was saying she should go on there and let them sort it for her or help her. i said she could contact me privately if she had trouble working out how to post up on their boards or if she was having trouble running the hijackthis program. that's it and frankly i don't like your tone. you don't know me nor do you know what i do or don't know about computers. it just so happens i have taken computer science courses and i'm very savvy with PCs and Mac OS. But I wouldn't offer to 'fix' someones computer for them only lead them in the direction that would be most helpful to them by professionals. My partner actually has a degree in CS and IT and can build computers so if i reaaallly needed to I could ask him but I think i can manage to help walk her through a small program to spit out her statistics and start up mecs from her reg. but I understand your concern, though it is highly unwarranted and really unnecessary since I'm sure she can make her own decisions! Computer shops will cost her a fortune when she could do it her self! Shame she's not local or I would have Martin fix it for her.

Re: E mail virus!

Nor should anyone with no or very little computer knowledge go into registry no matter what anyone tells them.
I mean it gets into every nook and crany and much of it usless just sitting there. And when you try and get rid of it if you do not go into registry to dig every tenticle out and get rid of it then it screws your computer up. However with a mac you do not actaully get affected by many virus.

i'm very aware of what a virus is and what Norton and AOHELL are all about. they are programs they are by definition just like viruses because viruses are programs!

So it would make sense for them to 'infect' your computer. the problem is that there are too many PC programmers and Windows compatable programmers are allowed to do as they like. Apple Mac on the other hand are on lock down. For good reason which is why there aren't many viruses out there that effect Mac products. PC viruses only effect PCs and Macs are only affected by Mac based viruses, to which there aren't many.

Just off to throw up at the word nortons. I use f-secure consistantly one of the best but l pay for it. The importaint thing is that it constatly updates. Norton only does it once a week. And it is as bad as a virus for infecting a computer.
