I agree. Little point in having the whizziest super nurse (however the qualification was gained) if they are unlikely to fit in with the team and be good with clients.

Re: Degree RVN 'vs' Day release RVN qualification

How come the nurse in practice had only just qualified if she had been working for 5 years?

I have a question, You are an employer and have two interviewees for a RVN post. The 2 nurses are both qualified (qualified 4 months ago). One has been working in a vet practice for 5 years where she/he went to college once a week to qualifiy as an RVN. The other went to Uni for 5 years where she/he qualified as an RVN. Who would you employ and/or if you had 2 positions available would you pay one more than the other?

Please let me know if you know of any legal rights for one over the other. Thank you all.

Paul, you joined on the same day as you posted this thread. I saw you online the next day and you were reading replies to this thread - however, you havent posted any reply to all the members who took the time and effort to reply to you

Reading your profile, its the only thread you posted and you havent commented on any other posts? I wonder the reason why you joined vetnurse?

How about a simple thank you to the members that did reply to you? It wouldnt take long, and its only manners after all

Re: Degree RVN 'vs' Day release RVN qualification

It came out in a survery a while ago that on average degree nurses actually get paid less than NVQ students.

Re: Degree RVN 'vs' Day release RVN qualification

I think you have to judge them on an equal basis and on their own merits. You could have a degree nurse with lots of experience because they have worked in variety of practices, exposed to a broad range of cases and methods and done holiday/weekend work over and above the required hours or one who has only done the minimum required of them. Equally you could have a very experienced day release who qualified in a busy varied practice with experienced RVN's to learn from or one who has only worked in a practice where nothing ever changes and students are glorified cleaners.

Day trial sounds the best way forward.

I don't think you can pay more for a degree as its the RVN qualification you are looking for rather than a BSc. I certainly didn't expect to get paid more when I qualified and didn't, it was my VN qualification that was more important than my degree and was what employers looked at.

Re: Degree RVN 'vs' Day release RVN qualification

The only difference between me (a rvn but in my last year of my BSc) and another nurse at work who qualified a few months after me through day release, is I have done business modules and she hasnt. If they had less experience/confidence than the other nurse, then they would probably get paid less as their responsibilities would be less.

Re: Degree RVN 'vs' Day release RVN qualification

I could get on my soap box very easily on this topic but have decided that life really is too short! You could be opening an whole can of worms!

2 whole VNs apply for one job?? Wishful thinking. We've been advertising for weeks and only had 1 VN apply (plus lots of potential students!)

As far as i am concerned a VN is a VN regardless of how they trained. It would be a new job, new situation so they are both technically starting from the bottom. (I am personally wary of degree VNs from bad experiences that i won't go into). I would advise my boss and HVN that they see them both for a days trial. I'm not privvy to who gets paid what but if asked i would advise that they are paying for the VN qualification and not the degree so the pay is the same. Salary can be reviewed over 6 months or so. As far as i am aware there are no legal differences provided they are both qualified and registered/listed - portfolio, exam etc.

Are you in the unique position of having to make this choice?

Re: Degree RVN 'vs' Day release RVN qualification

And if all else fails you could toss a coin and take the best of 3 or pull straws.

Re: Degree RVN 'vs' Day release RVN qualification

It would be a little unfair and biased for us to say what we thought.I am guessing the day release would say we are better and uni would say they are better.

You have to choose for yourself based on how each person performs. You could always ask them to spend a day each if you have not done so to see how they react to situations.

I would say no l would't pay one more than the other. It is often thought that just because a person has been to uni they are worth more. Quite frankly that is rubbish they both have their strong and weak points. They qualified at the same time so get the same wage until you feel that one or both needs to be upped to the next level by whatever means you use... decided fairly.

Legal rights not sure what you mean by that if they both hold a recognised vn status as set out by rcvs then they hold whatever legalities that gives.
