He does wonder whether its the skin glue though (something that he doesn't normally use) as a rabbit that was castrated last week ended up having an infection from licking too much too (it was also used on Dexter), whereas this rabbits brother didn't have the glue and has been fine.

He's had plenty of pain relief and I feel a lot better now (should last a good few days). I just hated the thought of the little fella being in pain, after all - he didn't choose to have this op. Although he didn't look or act like he was in pain, I did worry about him. I think it was probably more discomfort from the op - the clipping most be driving him mad.

He's hardly licked at it at all today. He's eating, drinking and toileting all fine and had a big run around a minute ago (me too as I was trying to catch up with him!).

Re: Rabbit castration

[quote user="Bouncyfi"]

We advise owners of bunnies that if they have to wear buster collars, to hand feed the caecatrophs the following day or even syringe feed them. Buster collars are not a definite no-no just need to feed them their poo

A good idea Fi, one I would advise to clients - what I was trying to say was long term use was a definite no no unless owners were prepared to either remove the collar at times or feed caecotrophs. Caecotrophs play a vital part of a rabbits diet - as I am sure we all know here anyway

Re: Rabbit castration

We advise owners of bunnies that if they have to wear buster collars, to hand feed the caecatrophs the following day or even syringe feed them. Buster collars are not a definite no-no just need to feed them their poo

Re: Rabbit castration

Button,

I would assume he has had pain relief, though if you want to be sure, then best to check with the practice.

I know buster collars are a no no for rabbits, however, if its a choice of him interfering too much with his wound, or not eating his caecotrophs for a night, I would definitely pop the collar on him. Put it on last thing tonight then take off first thing in morning and see how he is.

A lot of small furries (and big ones!) will lick and chew wounds because they are sore / painful. If they keep at it, they will open it up, and need re-anaesthetising to re-suture the wound, which obviously in a rabbit is not ideal. I would recommend you try & speak to someone from the practice (if they do their own OOH) and try & find out. If need be, can you take him along to have some pain relief? It might save you having to take him in again tomorrow for another op!
