Have any of you successfully approached a hospital for old equipment i.e. surgical instruments, anaesthetic circuits, ET tubes etc?
If so, how did you go about this?
Thanks

Got given a few boxes of swab packs not long ago by a client, nothing wrong with them, all sterile and in date but the hospital had decided to change suppliers and just got rid of all the old stuff. What a waste!

Re: Hospital Equipment....

The current pratice I work at got a lot of their equipment from NHS hospitals when they started up. Also there are showrooms that auction off old equipment.

Re: Hospital Equipment....

yes - I still have some contacts but have lost quite a few since moving around. Best way to do it is if you know somebody who works for NHS, or you are attending one of their clinics or if you approach somebody in the instrument and equipment archives in local hospital.

If you ever have an autoclave failure and you need stuff sterilising sometimes the local hospital will do it for a fee. Isnt usually that much - BUT this usually gives you a point of contact in the HSDU and once you have this contact chances are you will get offered stuff. Keep in with this contact and see what comes of it ( I was given 30 boxes of disposable drapes - yes you read it right - 30 boxes each containing 100 drapes ) these were non sterile but one of their sheet sized drapes = @50 cats spay drapes! Gauze swabs - I had a trailer full of these, chest drains by the box full, endo tubes, catheters, hypodermics, eye surgery stuff, sutures, bandages, incubators, xray cassettes, theatre gowns disposable and non disposable (some really really nice NASA types that one surgeon didnt like - but we did) ECG monitors and if you ever get chance snap up those drop side cots they are great for nursing ICU dogs. I used to work for charity too, stuff that was offered I made it clear that if I couldnt use it would pass it on to others that could and nobody had a problem with that and several people on the old vetnurse site were able to help me with that!

It is quite sad how much money must be wasted by the NHS if they are not using this amount of stuff!

Also had a couple of very good contacts who worked for a company making first aid boxes and dressings

Re: Hospital Equipment....

Tiggys get loads donated from various hospitals. We didn't ask, was just a couple of hospital staff members who brought animals in asked if we could use it, we said yes please, that was it :) it helps being a charity though...
