Any chemical has the potential to 'do the wrong thing' if its misused, so its a classic case of people trying to save a buck and not reading the information on the packaging. Sadly they seem to think its someone elses fault when the poor animal dies, when its their own!

I do not agree with it banning, l think is a step to far. The simple reason is that there is warnings on the packet. If an owner does not read it it is not the manufactures fault.

There is so many things that are toxic to various species you couldn't ban them all. A simple one based on banning is alcohol, this should be banned. Look at the state people get themselves into and then cause trouble to property, people and animals while under it's influence not including death for themselves, others or animals and finally it is highly toxic as shown by the latest figures from the NHS for those admitted to hospital with livers screwed.

There is a big correlation to wit: If a person chooses to go out and get wrecked they crash into my car and injure/kill me, l am an innocent victim just as much as the cat is an innocent victim. There is warnings on both bottle/can of alcohol and packet of BM but the person that chose to use them ignored the warning.

Advantix contains permethrin and there is a warning on the front saying not to be applied to cats, but the warning on the back advises that dogs & cats should be kept apart for 72 hours post application.

We had one reaction the other day. The owners in question couldn't read. They didn't report it until the day after and then only via a friend that was worried as they had rang him and told him that the cat wasn't "doing so well", When I rang the owner, he was out of town. AAARRRGGHH! We waited for the and the poor cat was so twitchy we thought she wasn't gonna do.

She'd had a full pipette of the XL dog tx. I know he can't read but surely he can tell the difference between a golden retriever and a cat? The tx itself was over a year out of date. Anyway, we bathed her again and again. Insult to injury, fleas were all over her! I'm happy to report that she did, ate that afternoon and was discharged as the twitchiness had all but stopped.

I am right in thinking that it's symptomatic tx, there's nothing else that's been recommended for tx that I don't know about? It's awful stuff - should be banned!

its xenex! have just had to go an look it up! have seen a cat very ill after 2 of these were put on because the owner had them in and figured if they were safe for the rabbit the cat was just a big bigger so got double the dose!

which is the flea treatment that contains permethrin that you can find commonly in veterinary practice ? - I know I havnt imagined this - I know I have seen it just cant for the life of me think of what it is at the moment (apologies to frontline)

Noooooooooooo!!!!!! It doesn't contain permethrin - it contains fipronil and methoprene. Methoprene is a completely different chemical and safe to everything except insects! Don't get them mixed up!!

permethrin is also in many of the supermarket house sprays too and personally I think these are just as dangerous. Have seen a litter of kittens sucumb to bob martins or the household spray - difficult to say which one it was that killed them- owner had treated adult cat with spot on and left the kittens because they werent old enough (so they had read some of the instructions!) but had then sprayed the room they were in with a fleaspray for the house

Have not had a real problem with frontline combo which contains permethrin s but one of my cats did develop what looked like a moist burn on the back of his neck when I applied it once and for this reason I will not use it again

as far as i was aware the cat treatment also contained this?? i know there is a huge push to get it removed from the market....

Working in a charity practice we see bob martins reactions regularly as many of our client see it as a cheaper alternative, I have had cats die after treatment with the cat products, contact with dogs that have been treated and obviously owners puting dog treatments on cats. Had a really sad case where we recently where we had to PTS 4 ten week old kittens after treatment with bob martinsthat said it was suitable for kittens. There is a similar page on face book which hopefull might get the message out there.

i have seen many cases of this unfortunately. bob martins contains permethrin which is toxic to cats (and is in the cat treatment). i have seen cats which have been given cats treatments and died but the worst was a young kitten (9weeks ish) which had been given the xl dog spot on./ the kitten had seizures and died but the fleas were still hopping about merrily.

bob martins is an awful product which should be taken off the shelves and more should be done to warn owners of the dangers.

if you type 'bob martin cat toxicity' into google you will see pleanty of cases which people have reported on. better still, get clients to do this and they may well believe what you say!!

i can honestly say that i dont think i have ever seen a cat who has come in unwell after bob martin application leave the practice through the correct door

indeed - and it's still an easily available product for unsuspecting owners.

Had first hand experience of cat one correctly applied to three cats, and one died after trying to save it for 24 hours, the other two were totally unaffected.

Never heard of the cat one killing. But I have heard and seen owners picking up the dog treatment instead (the packaging isnt that clear to 'joe bloggs') and thus poisoning their cats. Have had some die/pts and some survive though only because it has been applied and then almost immediately noticed.
