Thankyou for your advice it has helped a great deal to clarify what skills you need to be a receptionist. I have many years of customer service experience and have recently started to volunteer at the local Cats Protection which I really enjoy. I have applied to some practices but have had no luck yet. I will keep plugging away and fingers crossed. I am ever so sorry for the late reply I cant believe I put my message up in Sept and its now Dec. Thanks again and I hope all is going well at you practice.

Re: Veterinary Receptionist role

Dear Lisa,

The advert from Kerrie at Feldon vets would be good to enquire about. I started with the Feldon Group in September and am absolutely loving it. The people are lovely and the training is very comprehensive, with lots of encouragement & feedback. Contact me by reply if you want to know more about what I have learned so far

Re: Veterinary Receptionist role

Our practice is currently recruiting for a veterinary receptionist. We are based in leamington Spa, warwickshire. visit www.feldonvets.co.uk.
I decided that I wanted to make a change of direction careerwise & didn't know how to go about things initialy either. How old are you if you don't mind me asking? The only reason I ask is that age need not necessarily be a barrier to you in making the change Initially I studied a couple of animal health related modules part-time at my nearest animal college. Whilst I was there I noticed an advert on the college notice board for a Saturday morning receptionist / tea maker at a Veterinary practice local to me. I worked there on Saturdays for 2 years and 10 months & have recently started work at a new practice just over a month ago. I am loving it and wondered why I stayed in my old profession for so long. Animal related jobs do not offer the greatest of salaries, but the other rewards are great and you will probably work with some of the nicest people you could ever wish to work with. If you really want it - DON'T GIVE UP TRYING - I am testament to that. Good luck

Re: Veterinary Receptionist role

Officially, there are no qualifications required to become a Veterinary Receptionist. Obviously excellent communication skills and customer/client care skills are essential but a lot of the training can be done on the job. There are many brilliant CPD courses that are available once on practice to help with training and knowledge.

A lot of the veterinary side (flea/worm treatments, clinic procedures etc) are taught on the job, an animal care qualification may be useful for your own confidence but I wouldn't say its necessary. Good people skills and adapting well to work under pressure are all invaluable for receptionists.

Good Luck!
