I have been looking at veterinary nursing books (Starting coll in Dec, started SVN job) and have noticed how expensive they are. i have spoken to many people at work and was just wondering if you knew of good websites or places to get new

Re: soo expensive

Hi,

I have most of the books mentioned above and lots more all on or about vet nursing and various topics. I either use Amazon, Amazon market place, The book depository and Ebay.

My friends at college recon by the time I have finished collecting them I will have a bigger library than the RCVS lol

Veterinary Nursing by Lane and Cooper (what a lot of people call Jones)

The Complete Texbook of Veterinary Nursing by Aspinall
(these two are both pricey but cover a large range of topics, only one is necessary, your practice is likely to have them)

Introduction to Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology by Aspinall and O'Reilly

Veterinary Nursing Self-Assessment Questions and Answers by Julie Ouston (my fab lecturer at college!), when you come do doing yor exam revision this book is a godsend. It not only tells you what the answers are to the multiple choice questions, it's also explains WHY it's the correct answer. Between this book and various practice tests that were given to me by college a fair few of the questions came up in my actual exam, very useful! Sat there and thought...'hmm i know this answer, i did it yesterday!'!

Dictionary of Veterinary Nursing by Lane and Guthrie. It's ok but a more in depth one would be better i think.

I've got the How to Get Through NVQ2 but i didn't actually use it!

Happy shopping!

I'm going to do a mega order at college on thurs!

Re: soo expensive

this I found to be the best little book around for learning terminology etc when I was a trainee in the year dot - obviously this is the up to date version

The ones that I found helped were

Introduction to Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology by Victoria Aspinall - this explains the A+P side in clear detail, more so IMO than the Jones manual

How to get through NVQ2 in Veterinary Nursing - excellent revision aid, only thing is remember this wasn't written for the current syllabus so there will be some things in there that you won't have covered in 1st yr such as pharmacology.

The portfolio books are useful as a guide, but again these were written before the new changes in syllabus/case format came about. Not a huge problem, just bear in mind that some changes will have taken place since then.

As for dictionaries, the nursing ones tend to have more relevent information in there. The vet ones are good (especially Blacks) but there are loads of stuff about large animal work and other things that you won't need to know!

Def check out ebay though as you will often find some good bargains on there.

Re: soo expensive
Your practice will have good books such as the jone's. It is beeter to
have your own though. I would recommend a portfolio tips book, the
jones, and a good nursing (not veterinary) dictionary. Try ebay or even
vetnurse webpage itself. Also speak to qualified nurses within the
practice to see if they can loan your their books.
Can i just enquire as to why the general nursing dictionary is better than the veterinary ones? ( I have noticed that they are cheaper but there must be more reasons!)

I Have got some one who has said that they will let me borrow some anat and phys books but i would still like them. I have seen a couple of books for "clinical procedures in VN". is this one any good for the veterinary trainign or would this be a better one for afterwards once qualified?

some body at work also recommended the NVQ2 book as well (but again does not want to sell lol) so am going to look into them. The only main problem being them being so expencive!

Thanks again, keep the reccommendatison coming!
