The written questions are quite indepth and require short/ long answers (so no multiple choice!)

The practicle wasn't too bad as there where only a couple of us in the room so it took the pressure off a bit and not as regimented as the RCVS nuring practicles. (You have an exam superviser there but only 1 and she isn't an official vet boff)

I initially failed 1 paper and re-sat the following year, I was going through a lot at the time and to say the least my head was up my ***. I think who ever marked the papers must have had an awesome sense of humour as I couldn't answer a question and resorted to answering:-

Looking back on it now I can laugh and at least they probably did at any rate!

mine was paid in one lump sum so im not sure, the exam fees were paid on entering the exams. contact the college, im sure they will help.

Does anyone know if it can be paid in installments or do you have to pay the whole lot up front?

I did the course when it first came out, again it was run badly and was very disorganised.

Sad to hear that it hasn't changed.

I found "Clinical nutrition of the dog and cat" by Simpson, Anderson and Markwell good. Its published by Blackwell.

Hi Spud,

yeah im afraid the questions are quite in depth, they are mostly short sentance answers but for some i wrote a paragraph or two - i did run short of time tho as the time is tight for the written exams. some answers are just one word. or require you to draw and label a diagram. pretty much like the end of unit assessments.

the practical is again very tight for time. and what we were given was several food items and had to answer written questions on them. not really a "practical" as i had imagined it TBH. and two of these food items were exotic patient foods.

as for cost i think it was £440 for the course, and about £75 to sit the exam - my practice paid for me out of my CPD allowance.

I was looking at doing this course too but can't seem to find out how much it costs, what did those of you who've done it pay? And does anyone know anything about the RVC course and how it compares?

Yes I must say it's not very well run at all, I was asked to research, which I did and then on submitting my answers was told that I had to use the info provided by the course notes only??!?!?!?

I agree if your motivated then you will be fine otherwise you will struggle.

It's kind of put me off doing another course with them to be fair. Oh well!

Ok having completed it im sorry to say its not particularly well run.

it is all done by distance learning and there is little / no support if you have a problem. i was given no clear timetable for the submission of assessments.

when i sent in my end of unit tests they were marked but had little or no feedback. one assessment was lost by the college and i never recieved any marks for it despite resubmitting it!

i asked for guidance in how much reading around the subject was needed and was given none. thankfully i understood the subject but on the one area i did question there was minimal help and was pretty much left to sort it out for myself.

at the end of the course i sent my exam entry form off in june with the payment and did not recieve confirmation until a week before the exam! thankfully i assumed that i would be sitting it!!! i asked for past papers or sample questions to prepare and was told there were none!! then the staff running the exam seemed to have no idea how it should have been conducted and were a bit disorganised.

chatting to people while at the college to sit the exam we all had a similar experience so sadly i wasent alone in being a little dissatisfied.

i had to chase the college for about a month for my results ( as my practice were asking) and then when i recieved the certificates my name was spelt wrong so i had to retrun them - and now im waiting to get them back.

sorry if this is one big moan but i was really dissapointed. i loved the course material and i just wanted to learn more and more! BUT i spent the whole course in fear that i wasent doing enough. i expected better from a city and guilds course provided by a tertiary college.

so if you LOVE nutrition and are self motivated then give it a go. but if you think you will need some support then perhaps wait for the RVC one to start next year.

i am looking to do this course hopefully in the near future, just wondering what the feedback is from those who have done it??

also, can anybody recommend any good nutrition books (sa only). unfortunately i am crap at getting the nutrition stuff in my head but bizarrely have a very keen interest in it!!
